Or it could be when you're engaged in the flow of making art. Taking a hot bath; or a cold shower; going for a hike in the mountains; taking a train to somewhere you've never been before.
Feeling alive is all we have. It's what also leads to our best mindset; our best work and better relationships.
Write those things down, and then feature them more in your goals and your day.

Jim is a Detroit native who moved to New York and got his first writing job at the Doyle Dane Bernbach advertising agency, writing copy for the firm's Volkswagen campaign.

This year’s Eat Drink Read Write festival was structured around the concept of a four course dinner and served up tantalizing offerings that appeal to a variety of tastes and audiences. The festival brought together food, culinary arts, and literature in an engaging format for the entertainment and enrichment of the entire community.
After Dinner Drinks: Bards & Brews Poetry Slam
Friday, October 9
Time: 6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Central Library 2100 Park Place
The library's popular Bards & Brews spoken word poetry and craft beer tasting event closed the festival. Beer was donated from a number of local breweries including Cahaba Brewing Company, Good People Brewing Company, Avondale Brewing Company, and Back Forty Beer Company. Voice Porter, a performance artist and experienced poetry slam emcee, hosted the free evening at the Central Library. Poets competed in a slam for cash prizes while attendees sampled beer, coffee, and tea.
JP da Poet won first place and Glenwood Urbz came in as a very close second place.
As guy who writes for a living, I've got to say that Notting Hill's Redemption Bar have some pretty splendid strap lines. The first? 'Spoil yourself without spoiling yourself.' The second? 'A night off, not a night in'. So, if you hadn't gathered - Redemption's 'thing' is restaurant/bar type indulgence, but without the accompanying physical damage that comes with consuming shitloads of alcohol or the 'wrong' kind of foods ('wrong' from a health perspective). The menu is made up of vegan, sugar free, gluten free, alcohol free type reinterpretations of familiar dishes/drinks. For an example, instead of 'conventional' pasta, think "raw courgette spaghetti, tossed in walnet and pumpkin seed pesto, topped with a rocket and tomato salad and brazil nut âparmesan" - which is actually very delicious (verified and confirmed). And mocktails that donât suck (because, letâs be honest - a lot of the time cocktails are just fruit juice with a little pimping)
Anyway, Redemption is the brainchild of one Catherine Salway - who, amongst other things, spent 17 years working a 6 figure, power/high stress job at Virgin (describing her background as "brand, marketing, innovation and business"). With the idea for Redemption, Catherine must have picked up some of Branson's "screw it, let's do it" spirit. She summed it up herself best in one of her blog posts: "I wanted to break into the restaurant market which has high failure rates, without the single biggest profit driver (alcohol) in the most white hot property market in the world (London)". Hard graft and some good decisions seem to be paying off however - they've developed something of a cult following and write-ups in the like of The Telegraph, The Sydney Morning Herald and Time Out. I believe theyâre calling this style of place a âdry barâ, and that thereâs more on the way (good news for everybodyâs livers!)
Catherine herself doesn't actually know how to cook, so the menu and 'creative direction' can be attributed to the equally lovely Andrea Waters, the other half of Redemotion. Andrea's a kiwi with a background in nutrition, raw and vegan foods. We had a chat with her and can verify that she is super chill and 'on the level'. As for a food recommendation? Probably my favourite of the things I tired was the aforementioned pasta .The ethos/approach Redemption takes is pretty cool, they're offering an alternative but they're not preaching. They've also got a zero waste policy and take the whole sustainability issue very seriously. It's a fine thing to see people who do things, reaping good things. They've come a long way since their first three residencies in Hackney, Portobello and Holborn - and it looks like their future is promising. I hope they go further still. Well done Andrea and Catherine :)
ART.WRITE.NOW Tour, a selection of works from the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, is currently on exhibit in our Swigert Commons! The exhibit represents a small sample of the Alliance’s annual national exhibition, which in 2011 showcased more than 600 works from teens in grades 7 through 12.
The ART.WRITE.NOW Tour is central to the Alliance’s mission to provide recognition for creative teens and to highlight the value of arts education," said Virginia McEnerney, Executive Director of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. "The exhibition gives visitors a body of top-notch art that we hope will inspire them to appreciate creative teens for their maturity, talent and originality."
This exhibit is amazing, and is well worth the trip to PNCA if you are in Portland!

"During a recent tour of Turkey I had the opportunity to visit Gallipoli for a day – now a peaceful, picturesque peninsula. Among the wheatfields, wildflowers, native roses and bright yellow broom bush it was difficult to imagine it as a battleground, devastated by warfare as it was in 1915...
"Having been interested, but not actively involved in the Mosman Doing our bit project, I decided shortly before departure that perhaps, if the opportunity arose, I could photograph the headstones of some of the Mosman men who died at Gallipoli. A very quick look through George Franki’s book resulted in a list of around 35 possibilities, and the Australian War Memorial Honour Roll gave locations of their burials. Of these I (assisted by my cousin and other fellow travellers) was able to find and photograph over half of these memorials...
We had a very informative and enjoyable day at Gallipoli, made more interesting by having some names of men with Mosman connections to look for, and to think of their short war and the loss felt by their families at home."
