The concern is different from worry and empathy is the most useful way to be supportive of someone who is suffering. I never even heard the word self-esteem until my kids were young and received participation trophies. I told them that those trophies were meaningless, only the winners should receive trophies because they earned them. This is where I beg to differ with your teaching. Read Ayn Rand for a distinction between egoism and egotism. No rational need to confuse the two. You lack self-esteem, and others will push you around.

This was a bit worrying! As the guys needed to be back early in order to get a plane or bus, we left the village at about 6am and got the boat back across the lake. But as the sun doesn't rise until 7, they have to navigate in the dark, and the rain, through sections of plants and reeds. This involved rowing a bit, and the engine stopping and starting a lot. Nonetheless, it was quite fun!!
