Alexanderplatz, the central square of Berlin, was named in 1805 in honor of Russian Emperor Alexander I as a symbol of friendship between Russia and Prussia (as the leading German state was called at that time). The so-called "World Clock" (at the forefront in the photo) is one of the few emplematic structures of the GDR-epoch that has not been torn down following Germany's reunification.

The explanation says that there is true solar time: at 12 noon the sun will be highest in the sky. Local time takes South pole as centre of the world map; 15 degrees east is + 1 hour, 15 degrees west is - 1 hour. Since 1700 there the Gregorial calender became a rule. But there is sidereal time too, based on the rotation of the earth in relation to the stars and that sedereal day and night is 3 min. and 56.555 sec shorter than our day and night. To make time even more complicated the firmament and the celestial pole migration also seem to have influence; so time can be confusing. This clock has it all and I know that I'm too late when the train leaves without me.

Who say's I can't start drinking now?

3 nights later, I could see wave detail in clouds very high in the sky. This could only be ash/smoke from the volcano. It looks way too high to be from a local brush fire. Contrast enhanced to show cloud detail.

According to www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/astronomy.html?n=770&m..., this was taken almost right at sunset, but I don't buy it.
