Alexanderplatz, colloquially called Alex, is a square and traffic hub in the eastern part of Berlin. More than 300,000 people come every day. The square is located in the Mitte district and was named after Tsar Alexander I of Russia on October 25, 1805. The 1969 Weltzeituhr is a well-known meeting place on the square. Close to the square is a major tourist attraction, the Fernsehturm (television tower).
In the GDR era, the square was the artificially created center of East Berlin, with important government buildings and prestige projects on the square, including the Stadt Berlin hotel
