Dharavi,Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, 23 July 2012:.Children are fed puffed rice by an anganwadi worker and helper, at a cramped up Anganwadi center in the slums of Dharavi in the metropolis of Mumbai. To combat undernutrition in young children, the Government of India relies largely on the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS). Begun in 1975, the scheme provides health and nutrition education for mothers of infants and young children, along with other services, such as supplementary nutrition, basic health and antenatal care, growth monitoring and promotion, preschool non-formal education, micronutrient supplementation and immunization. UNICEF is collaborating with the Government of India to increase the effectiveness of ICDS. UNICEF India/2012/Vishwanathan.

It smells pretty ripe, it's a long walk to get there, but wow, what an incredible sight. The Fes Tannery hasn't changed much in hundreds of years and everything is still done by hand using natural processes.

Red Cross Health Services volunteers consult during a training drill on February 27.

The Red Cross Serving King & Kitsap Counties staged a shelter simulation exercise for 30 new volunteers. These dedicated community members came to the Red Cross over the past few months through their employers – Microsoft, Costco and Eagleview Technologies – to serve as a reserve task force that will be called upon if and when a major local disaster occurs.

New disaster workers experienced what it is like to set up and run a Red Cross shelter, from processing registration paperwork to setting up cots and food. Experienced Red Cross shelter workers supervised the new recruits, working as shift supervisors and shelter managers, and about a dozen staff and community volunteers acted as shelter clients, presenting scenarios for the new shelter workers to solve. Teams from Health Services, Mental Health Services, Logistics and Public Affairs also participated.

Special thanks to Microsoft, which has embraced the Ready When the Time Comes Program and donated its facilities for Saturday’s exercise.

A brickfield worker toils under the scorching sun, molding clay into bricks, their hands etched with the marks of labor. In the dusty landscape of the brickyard, amidst stacks of drying bricks, they engage in the physically demanding task of shaping, stacking, and firing bricks in traditional kilns. Despite the challenging conditions, these workers play a crucial role in the construction industry, contributing to the creation of buildings that shape communities. Their resilience mirrors the strength of those often unseen, laying the foundation for progress with each brick they meticulously craft in the relentless heat of the brickfield.
