Valle de los Caídos – Valley of the Fallen
The monument was built between 1940 and 1950 by thousands of Republican political prisoners. Miners caved their way through the mountain using dynamite without the help of tunnel machinery. Other prisoners, like peasants, military people and workers were used as unskilled workers. They had to handle big blocks of rock, and as there were no security measures there were daily accidents, in many cases mortal.
José Antonio Primo de Rivera, the founder of the Falange Party, a Fascist inspired political party, was buried there. He was killed in the Civil War, and after the war dictator Francisco Franco ordered political prisoners to walk all the way from the south of Spain to Valle de los Caídos, carrying his coffin.
There are also 33.872 combatants from both sides buried there to create a symbol of reconciliation - even though the monument and the basilica were built to ‘perpetuate the memory of the fallen in our glorious Crusade’. It was to be a tribute to ‘the heroic sacrifice which the Victory embraces and the transcendence it has had for the future of Spain’.
In the monastery there are 19 archives with the data of about half of those buried there. The other half had been found in mass graves, and their identities are unknown.
Franco is buried in this monstrosity which he erected in homage of himself.
At present some Spanish political parties have proposed that the monument be used as a reminder of Franco’s and his followers’ acts during the Civil War and 40 years of dictatorship. In 2006 the EU made a resolution to condemn Franco’s dictatorship in terms of Human Rights. The EU proposed to create an educational, permanent exhibition in the subterranean basilica, and that it would emphasize the way political prisoners were forced to build the monument. – But some Spanish political parties and the Catholic Church oppose this. It would seem that the Catholic Church thinks that some things are best forgotten; they were always Franco’s true followers…
The bus service for the monument has been cancelled. The big majority of Spanish people ignore the fascist monuments, and they are not promoted as tourist attractions.
I wasn’t able to enter the basilica because they were celebrating mass, so there are no photos from there.

Dock workers of Hongkong International Terminals, Ltd., a subsidiary of Asia's wealthiest man Li Ka-shing's Hutchison Port Holdings, have been on strike for four weeks. The Union of Hong Kong Dockers called the strike for workers at the Kwai Tsing Container Terminal on 28 March 2013. The dock workers seek a wage increase and better working conditions. As cash from mainland China's nouveau riche has flooded tiny Hong Kong, the cost of living has vaulted, pricing out ordinary lifelong Hong Kongers. The dock workers also argue that the average hourly wage was higher in the mid-1990s before a pay cut they allege was to be temporary was instituted during the 2003 SARS crisis, a claim Hongkong International Terminals denies.
