Members of the Longshoremen's union gather every morning at 6.30 in the Despatching Hall near Long Beach Port. If there's work to be had on the docks it will be allocated through a system that's 75 years old. The longer you've been in the union the more likely you are to get a job but those with fewer hours worked during the week so far, come first. Here the men are looking up at the electronic boards that tell them which jobs are available.
