Maya, the dominant female, keeps the young males away from Shadow. Maybe she knows what the future will bring. RIP, Maya, she died 3/1/11 from injuries sustained probably from a fall.

Large Wolves

Taken @ Blijdorp Zoo Rotterdam, Holland.

The wolf has been associated with Northern Hemisphere people for centuries, and remains, even today, a creature of folklore and superstition. The coloration of wolves varies greatly from snow white to coal black and all the intermediate degrees of cream, grey, and brown. Wolves have a well-developed social hierarchy. The pack leader is usually the largest and strongest dog and is followed in rank by younger or senile males, then the leader's mate, the other females, and finally the pups in order of strength. All members of the pack accept responsibility for the young, and care for other adults' pups, if both parents are hunting. There have been very few cases of authenticated wolf attacks on humans in North America. (ref:wikipedia.com)

After looking at the images I though this one gave a better/clearer view of the faces of the Wolves than the previous image I posted. I am not sure what was being communicated but I believe the message was made clearly : )

Back to the wolves. Judging from her comments, I think this is the shot the naturalist at the zoo liked best.

Some like them, some don't. I love dogs and I like photographing Wolves.

A few shots of some of the wildlife encountered along the way, wolves are one of the most important parts of the eco system they are a keystone species without which the rest of the system starts to crumble beavers also fit into this slot.

Taken at Colchester Zoo in Aug 2011

We watched the Madison Pack of Wolves (8 wolves) try to cull a yearling Bison calf out of a herd for almost 2 hours during a snowstorm. Everytime they got close, one of the Bulls would lower his head and inch forward, that was all it took to chase the wolves away. The wolves finally gave up and went back into the forest.

nature's here, the wolves are still missing

This is two of eight wolves in the pack in the Haliburton Forest. This is a male grey wolf exerting his dominance over another male (standing over him). The wolves are captive but freely roam a 15 acre enclosure and have minimal human contact.

This very well might be my favorite pic from our trip. We watched 2 wolves run across frozen Otto lake .. We also had a few moose walk right up to our deck. This was in Healy, not far from Denali National Park. Then of course there is the alluring treeline. Something very special about these trees. For me, the personification of Alaska ..

Grey WolvesThe wolves of the Grouse Mountain Refuge for Endangered Wildlife are retirees from the movie industry. Originally born into captivity and hand raised, the wolves are unable to be released into the wild. The former "Hollywood North" animals are, therefore, being afforded a chance at the most natural and enjoyable life possible at Grouse Mountain.

Grouse Mountain is proud to give these wolves a large, protected home, at the base of our mountain, where they can roam freely and explore their habitat.

In addition to the vegetation and wildlife within the habitat, the wolves are carnivores and their diet consists of beef, chicken, horsemeat, and fish with vitamin and mineral supplements.

They belong to a species known as grey wolves (Canis lupis).

It decided to snow the day I could take my week 5---silly snow! The weather has been jumpy- yesterday was nearly 50 and now we are getting hit with buckets of snow. But snow is a magical thing and I don't mind it, just makes everything a little harder to handle. This project is suppose to be a challenge though! I don't own a lot of hats but I found this one in box in the basement. I used to read these books about wolves and shifters and thought it would be a good fit :)
