Two gray wolves from Poland at the park 'Les Loups du Gévaudan', Saint-Léger-de-Peyre, France
The 'Bête du Gévaudan' - the Beast of Gevaudan - was a real wolf-like monster that prowled the Auvergne and South Dordogne areas of France during the years 1764 to 1767, killing about 100 people, often in bizarre circumstances.
There's much talk of re-wilding Scotland's mountains and forests. Apart from diversifying the wildlife, it's seen as a possible solution to the problem of too many deer. It's estimated there are about a million deer in Scotland causing much environmental damage, particularly to trees, which are seen as part of the solution to de-carbonising the world. Wolves and large cats, such as lynx, were part of the Scottish landscape until hunted to extinction hundreds of years ago, but they might reduce the deer population to sustainable levels.
But today I saw some wolves up close. They were a lot bigger than I expected, and as a pack, ran much faster than I would have believed. Having just seen "The Grey" movie where a pack of wolves hunt down a group of survivors from a plane crash in Alaska, they were rather frightening even at arm's length.
Farmers object on the basis they will kill livestock. I object on the basis I am frightened enough to go into a forest on my own already.
Lynx, i reckon, will be OK. Yes, I've met a panther on a walk before, and whilst it made me rather jumpy, a single animal I can cope with. A pack is another matter

This photo shows behavior that I did not know of : young wolves to be fed, bite their mother's lower lip so that she regurgitates the chewed food. In fact, their teeth are not yet effective in cutting prey or chewing meat.
It's a great blessing to be able to see wolves in the wild. I've been fortunate to see them many times over the years. On a few occasions, I've even had one or more cross the trail or road in front of where I was standing. There are a number of animals that I get excited to observe, but there's something extra special about seeing a wolf.
This is the Madison River pack of wolves in Yellowstone National Park. Its a new pack that came from somewhere outside the park and has established themselves along the Madison River. The bison were distracted by most of pack (5 in this shot), which were playing along the hillside, while one of them circled around behind the herd. It was all in vain as each time a wolf came close to the bison the big animals lowered their heads and chased the wolves away.
During our stay in Palm Springs, we visited the Living Desert Zoo where we saw a pack of wolves. These two are very attentive because it was feeding time and their keeper was throwing raw meat into their enclosure.
