According to the zoo's website, the Mexican gray wolf is the smallest of the groupings of animals we call "wolf." They're about half the size of a North American gray wolf. They're known to howl, and it's considered a treat to hear them at the zoo.

4 wolves and 13 brown bears living together in a spacious 2ha = 5 acres heavily forested natural habitat
These wolves were in captivity at the Grouse Mountain Wolf Display. They are still loosing their winter coats. The good thing is they're close to where I live so I'm sure I'll go back.

Wolves tend not to make eye contact (unlike dogs) so you have to be ready to snap a shot when they give you a quick glance. Lakota Wolf Preserve, Columbia , NJ USA
Pictured is one of the yearling wolves from the Lamar-Canyon pack. The alpha female (known as the ‘06 female) made a solo kill of an elk. The ‘06 female is an amazing hunter and she has kept her pack fairly well intact despite pressures from neighboring packs trying to muscle in on the Lamar Valley. Unfortunately I arrived at this scene after the other wolves had departed and only the yearling was feeding and defending the carcass against the ever-opportunistic ravens. This young wolf put on quite a show and delighted those on hand for a good stretch of time. The ‘06 female made a brief appearance near the carcass and I was so saddened to see a radio collar on this magnificent wolf. I could not bring myself to take her photo after Jerry and I had a wonderful time photographing her last September free of this branding. Thankfully, it has not hindered her ability to provide for her pack.
