This beautiful dark wolf was enjoying lunch when we arrived at the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center. I believe it was eating a piece of meat rather than the fish steak its lighter-colored pack-mate found for its lunch.
Ever notice how the teeth of wild carnivores (even though this one spent its entire life in captivity) are white and clean, compared to those of our domestic pets, who may have to go to the veterinarian at least once a year for dental care under anesthesia?
I'm much more familiar with the individual citizens living at Montana Grizzly Encounter near my home than I am with the specific animals housed at the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center just outside of Yellowstone's entrance at the town of West Yellowstone, Montana.
However, at GWDC the animals are clearly healthy and seem to be happy in captivity where they don't have to concern themselves with where there next meal is coming from or other risks of life in the wild.
The GWDC is a wildlife park that provides sanctuary for grizzly bears, wolves, otters, raptors, and other wildlife that, due to a variety of circumstances, such as captive breeding, would not be able to survive if released to the wild. The facilities for husbandry are superb, and the public education programs are top notch.

Der Wolf lebt im Rudel, das aus dem Elternpaar und deren Nachkommen besteht. Junge Wölfe bleiben zunächst bei den Eltern und unterstützen sie bei der Aufzucht der neuen Welpen. Mit der Geschlechtsreife (2 Jahre) wandern sie ab und suchen ihr eigenes Revier.
Jedes Rudelmitglied hat seinen Platz in der Familienhierarchie. Jeder Rang hat seinen eigenen Namen. Die Rudelgröße ist abhängig von Beutegröße & Vorkommen.

The young wolves at Wildwood Escot in East Devon came from Sweden as pups and have just come out of quarantine on Thursday. They are being studied by scientists and there is a discussion about releasing wolves back into the wild in the highlands of Scotland as the belief is that the landscape and eco system will significantly benefit. The wolves at Escot are named Elvis, Sting, Lemmy, Moby, PJ and KD. Lemmy is the mischief maker I understand. This one looks like butter wouldn't melt and they are very tame and sociable.

Ya, a bit off the wall, but the paper cuts are experimental for me, and I find it a compelling image, although a bit disturbing. I was pushing the edges of the wolf about three years ago when I did this one.

Arctic Wolf

Like all wolves, Arctic Wolves hunt in packs, preying mainly on Caribou and Muskoxen, but also Arctic Hares, seals, ptarmigan and lemmings, and smaller animals such as waterfowl. To eat rodents they must pick up their scent and find the entrance to their tiny dens to flush them out. Wolves almost never attack humans. Due to the scarcity of prey, they roam large areas, up to 2,600 km2 (1,000 sq mi), and follow migrating caribou south during the winter. They are not fast runners, instead relying on stamina to take down prey.
They kill their prey with a bite on the neck. Adult wolves have 42 teeth, their main weapon in hunting. They swallow food in large chunks, barely chewing it. They eat all of their prey, including the bones. Wolves can eat up to 20 pounds (9 kg) of meat at one meal. When they return from the hunt, wolves regurgitate some of the food for the hungry pups.

A wolf ran by our car in Yellowstone National Park! This wolf was causing a big traffic jam! He or she ran on the side of the road and then continued onto the road and headed to a canada goose nest! There were a lot of happy Yellowstone visitors that day!
