A steel cable (wire) wrapped together with a heavy gauge electrical wire carrying power to the house.
This is a bin full of wires that have been removed from computers at a the E-Cycle Solutions electronics recycling facility in Airdrie, Alberta. They will be sold for the copper content. The insulation can be removed by machine.
Another view of the DA and ADR 3rd stage. I have marked the detector output wires. All other wires you see are either current supply to the superconducting magnets or thermometer wires. There are 44 thermometers in the system, so we can measure temperature in many different places. Also visible in this photo is a temporary protective cap, made of a small aluminum parts tray and tape, to protect the X-ray filter from damage. The filters allow X-rays through, but not visible light, ultraviolet, infrared, or radio waves. They are very delicate; you can destroy them by breathing on them.

Short photo session tonight due to the weather, but thought this one looked half decent, bad light pollution though.
I can never remember what this is supposed to signal. Gangs? Broken
hearts? Hobos?
This is right at my usual Muni stop, so I guess I'd better start
bracing myself for whatever gang war/breakup/hobo convention is about

The inert gas and wire come into the black tube emerging from the top box which is the wire feeder. The wire and gas come out of the welding gun which is laying near the bottom of the power source box at the end of the black tube. The inert gas tank source at the left goes on a shelf behind the power source box.
I wound the transformers to get the correct voltage and arranged several of them together to get an amperage of 320 amps.
The wire feeder can be used with any power source including my gas powered Hobart portable welder.
The two boxes to the right are a 120 amp plasma cutter and a current regulator for tig welding with a foot pedal for control--all of which I made also. I didn't finish the plasma cutter since I didn't want to buy the nozzle parts. I could not make my own that were good enough.
As with many other of my electronic projects, I got almost all the electronic parts from the surplus of the closing of Heath Kit in town. The surplus store also has since closed.

The wires on the left are for system RAM. These are the trickiest wires on the board- they are soldered to individual traces, most of which are only accessible in the narrow gap between the CPU and RAM chips.
The wires on the right are for the NAND flash's MMC bus. I can use them to read, write, and trace flash memory.
