Surfest is a surfing competition in Newcastle, NSW. This year Surfest is celebrating it's 30th year, and events have expanded to Lake Macquarie, just south of Newcastle. Redhead Beach is hosting Long Board, Standup Paddle Board and some surfing events, There were many people down at the beach today, and the weather was perfect. Some events in Newcastle have been halted in the last few days due to sightings of large Great White Sharks.
Some gulls on a rock playing in the splash zone. This is actually in a series - I uploaded a similar photo a while back (full spray) and this one was just after that moment.

I don't know if it was a bad day for surfing (are there any?) or what, but I managed to catch several wipeouts that day in about an hour.

A couple of weeks ago we joined a friend and her dog at Squirrel Creek Conservation Area with our two. I was trying to capture a shot of them splashing through the water so we were throwing a rubber stick to the opposite side of the wet area to set up shots. The dogs of course were enjoying a very competitive game of chase at the same time, and Sampson was finding himself outmanoeuvred by the poodles. In this sequence, Sampson tried to corner at full speed and did a full face plant into the water. He then gets up, shakes him self off vigorously, then gives us a very sheepish look as if to say "What are you laughing at!".
If you're gonna surf, you're gonna wipeout sometimes.
