Very cold temperature of -10 Celsius on this morning but about -18 C with windchill factored in. The sun was out briefly when I arrived but soon enough clouds and a lake effect snow flurry passed overhead.
It was very chilly on the hands for taking photos! Even with gloves it was hard to press the shutter when I left! And in these covid times there is no public facing buildings open at the Niagara Parks to warm up in. Everything is closed. Thankfully we can still go outside for exercise, keeping all of the pandemic protocols in mind such as avoiding crowds, keeping physically distanced, and wearing masks. Despite the cold, winter is a uniquely beautiful time of year and it was good to be outside both mentally and physically. The wonder of nature always makes me feel better!
This view is looking from Canada, and the American side is in the distance.
A year ago, we had a perfect winter day. I'll be posting several more from that day, too.
Speaking of winter, here's a talented newcomer with some beautiful winter shots, James Choy. Drop by and see!
While it is more difficult to find beautiful scenery in the winter, it can be found under the right circumstances.
Following a fresh snowfall that ended only a few hours before, 511 approaches Akerley Blvd with C44-9WL 2512 and class unit SD70M-2 8000 on January 23, 2021. The unit train of gypsum empties have just been picked up at Wright's Cove and are on their way west to National Gypsum's mine at East Milford. Since there was no CN Christmas train this year due to lack of manpower, I figured this would be an appropriate take for the annual Christmas greeting. I want to wish a very Merry Christmas to my friends and followers as you spend time with friends and family this holiday season!
It's been years since we had a White Christmas or a white New Year, but we had a sprinkling of snow in November 2025 - I've saved some of these photos for the New Year! We live in Bruges, not so far from the Belgian coast, and snow has become quite rare over here.
First rays of the sun at top of the mountains. Seen from Gaschurn, Silvretta Alps, down in the valley.

Ein Foto aus dem Jahr 2013 (mit meiner Panasonic DMC-TZ7), könnte jedoch ebenso dieser Tage entstanden sein :-). Baby, it´s cold outside!
this pier has been taking a good battering of late with the high tides winds and rain...that wintry feeling is encroaching
UP manifest MRONY (Salt Lake/Roper Yard to Denver/North Yard) looks more like a coal train at first glance. The short freight is passing through fresh snow along the Green River Sub just west of Wellington, UT. UP 6044 shows signs of battling snow drifts, perhaps on Soldier Summit.
I had hard time coming up with a title for this one. It's almost April and still no signs of spring here. Nature has its faded colors as winter weather is still around. Ogunquit, Maine is a nice touristic village by the sea and for me its highlight is the so called "Marginal way", a 1 mile long hike over the cliffs south of Ogunquit beach. As this "beach walk" is facing the east, I am really intrigued to come here during the sunrise and take a few long exposure shots of the sun rising over the waves that crush on the cliffs.
After a night of heavy snowfall, SM42-2193 pulls a set of Res carriages loaded with freshly cast steel slabs from the Warsaw Steel Mill (ArcelorMittal Warszawa) into the station Warszawa Radiowo for the ST48-002 to pick up the train a couple of hours later.
Since our last visit it had turned out that camera surveillance was installed on the area of Warszawa Radiowo, so I advice future travellers to this very climatic place to have caution while traversing the tracks.

Vischering Castle (German: Burg Vischering) in Lüdinghausen, North Rhine-Westphalia is the most typical moated castle in the Münster (region) of Germany. This region has one of the highest German concentrations of castles, palaces and fortifications, Lüdinghausen having three by itself. The castle consists of outer defensive courtyard, defensive gateways, moat, drawbridge, main building and chapel. The sandstone walls, the red tile roofs as well as their reflection in the moat provide many harmonious views from the wooded surroundings.
