During the winter months, snowmobiling has become a hobby that most residents pick up at one point or another.

Hot Sulphur Springs, Colorado

Grand County’s county seat, the small town of Hot Sulphur Springs has played an important part in the history of the area. Named for the hot springs that line the canyon along this stretch of the upper Colorado River, the area was first visited by passing Ute and Arapaho hunting parties who called the area “big medicine.” White trappers and hunters first visited the hot springs in the early 1800s and by the turn of the century, the town was a popular resort community. Today, the small town just east of Kremmling is home to one of the finest resorts in the nation and welcomes young and old to bathe in the warm, soothing waters that made Hot Sulphur Springs famous.

Ice Skating on Shadow Lake at Northfield Mount Hermon, January 11, 2011

Fabyan Park has a pretty long hill for sledding. If there's snow on the ground there will be a few dozen people of all ages out enjoying the slope.

Around Christmas each year I clear off the table and do a few puzzles. I have a few in my collection that I put together over and over again, but every year or two I buy a new one. When I was in Cincinnati in early November I picked up a new Ravensberger 'Road Trip USA' for this week. It was a fairly easy puzzle, we opened it up Tuesday night and finished it the next morning. It's a fun one though, I love the theme!

Smugglers’ Notch ski resort is among top ski resorts in the Eastern United States. Voted number one for family programs by a Ski Magazine’s reader survey, this resort offers great terrain, including the only triple black diamond in the East, unbeatable views, great deals on lift tickets, and a variety of programs so that everyone can have plenty of fun. The only disadvantage is the long drive, if you leave in the tri-state area.

I visited Smuggs during the 2008/2009 ski season, and I admit - it is a viable alternative to some high-priced ski resorts. Of course, Smugglers’ Notch is proud to offer one of the best family-oriented resorts in Vermont; however, there are still many options for adrenaline-craving adults. Three big mountains and 1000 acres of terrain provide plenty of opportunities to introduce beginners to the sport, keep intermediates busy, and challenge advanced skiers.

Feel free to visit and read the rest of an article on my Vermont travel blog at www.vertexpress.com.

And have a great ski season!

A great winter activity should you not want to ski all the time.

“Snow Day”

~~~~~~~~~~
When you’re a kid, the best thing about winter, make that the ONLY good thing about Winter is the snow! I can remember hearing anchorman Jim Gardner and weatherman Dave Roberts talk about snow coming and the excitement would begin to build. The next morning, listening intently to the old transistor alarm clock radio, the anticipation building as they read through the long list of numbers for school closings. It was one of the only times as a kid that I actually prayed. “...310, 311, 312, 315, 454...” waiting and waiting. Then they would announce “all public and parochial schools are closed!” Cheers would ring out throughout the house. I’m telling you, the celebration was bigger than New Year’s!
Now the preparation began. Putting on sweatpants, 2 layers of socks, a double layer of sweatshirts, snow suit, boots, hat, gloves and scarf. Then I’d go into the garage and grab my plastic snow board (which I have now passed on to my daughters) and find the biggest hill I could. If I were REALLY lucky, one of the neighborhood parents would offer all of us a ride and we’d go to the notorious Suicide Hill! I didn’t care about the climb back up Kilimanjaro to get to the summit. The cold didn’t bother me. It was the best day Winter had to offer. After all, it was a SNOW DAY!
Snow Shoeing In New Hampshire's White Mountains
Let's face it, winter is really getting to be a never ending drag. B & J invited a few friends over for their "Turn Up The Heat" party. They cranked the heat up in their home to 80 degrees, instructed everyone to come with summertime clothing, sandals, beach wear, gardening wear, Hawaiian shirts, sandals and sunglasses for an evening of creatively mixed frozen beverages (confidentally to B: the beergarita was ... mm, interesting. hee)
Everyone was lei-ed at the door, long pants came off, feet were released from the grips of heavy-duty Columbias and woolen socks into joyous flip-flops, and I really did forget that it was crappy outside for a few hours.
Don’t let winter get you down – stay active. Athletic Edge Sports Medicine can help with the winter blues.
The week between Christmas and New Year's we did a lot of fun things with our friends since they both had the week off of work (and we work from home so we can rearrange our schedules). We went bowling, ice skating, shopping, out to eat, watched movies, playing board games and so much more. It was fun!
Spend your time on the slopes, not in lift lines.
It was a challenge to get my gear up the mountain wearing my skis and even a bigger challenge coming back down. The view from the top was just incredible and the day I went up with my camera ended up being perfect. I have to give a great compliment to the safety patrol people, they were so kind to invite me into their warm hut to keep my ski boots warm. I had no idea that when I reached the top that it would be clear and to my amazement, I felt like I was standing on top of the world!
