I took some pictures during my last visit to Mt Rainier NP, but they were a bit boring, blue sky without any clouds and white white snow. I tried to experiment and convert this into B&W, and I like it more.

In Luosto, there are many hiking trails to explore. When walking Luosto Nature Hiking Trail, you pass Kantalampi lake. The trail runs through the versatile landscape of central Lapland, circling around and on top of the Ukko-Luosto Fell. One of Ellin Saamenmaa's small wooden huts is nestled among the trees, close to the lake. In Finland, these traditional wooden structures are often referred to as puutalo or wooden cabins . You can explore the shores of Kantalampi lake while hiking, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing. At the heart of Ellin Saamenmaa lies an open fire pit, where you can bask in the cozy atmosphere. I can imagine lively tales of Finland shared around the campfire, accompanied by a warm drink. Campfire pits, or designated campfire areas, hold a special place in the Finnish outdoor experience. In Finland, the right to enjoy nature is cherished, known as jokamiehenoikeus , meaning everyone's right. This principle grants people the freedom to access and relish nature, including building campfires, under the condition of acting responsibly and preserving the environment. These pits not only serve a functional purpose but also foster social gatherings where individuals unwind, cook, and exchange stories. For Finns, spending time in nature , with campfires casting a warm glow, is a cherished tradition. Simple yet delectable dishes are often prepared at campfire pits in Finland. Grilling "makkara" (sausages) over the flames is a beloved pastime. Finnish sausages like "lenkkimakkara" (boiled sausage) or "poromakkara" (reindeer sausage) are roasted and savored with mustard and bread. We set out early in the darkness on our journey to Luosto. Our plan is to climb its spectacular fjells (mountains) and explore its pristine wilderness. Our adventure starts at the secluded hamlet of Ukko-Luostontien in Luosto. In Finland, traditional wooden houses are often referred to as "wooden cabins" or "wooden chalets." The Finnish word for a wooden house is puutalo. The snow here resembles an untouched white carpet, with trees draped in a thick layer of powder snow. Every step disrupts the serene silence of the snowy surroundings; the crunching sound of fresh snow under my hiking boots fills the air. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow, and nature here in Luosto appears to be in a deep winter slumber. .

We went dog sledding when we were in Quebec! It was so much fun!
Adventures Nord-Bec Stoneham is located right in the beautiful Laurentian Mountains, about an hour north of Quebec City. What a great company. Their love, devotion and dedication to the safety and wellbeing of their dogs is foremost and most obvious. Never have I seen happier dogs. If only we could get that kind of joy at work every day!

Last week we went glamping at Killarney Provincial Park. We were delighted to find that there was still plenty of snow up north.
This photo was taken from Bear Lookout. The lake below is George Lake and the La Cloche mountains can be seen in the distance.
The primarily white quartzite La Cloche Mountains are the stubs or ‘hearts’ of ancient mountains. These mountains are some of the oldest mountains on earth. It is believed that they were once higher than the Rocky Mountains and are estimated to be 3.5 billion years old.

In January, daylight hours are very short due to the polar night, a phenomenon occurring in areas above the Arctic Circle, including Lapland. We set out early in the darkness on our journey to Luosto. In Lapland, the colors of the sky during sunrise and sunset can be very intense due to the low position of the sun on the horizon. The long twilight periods can produce unique colors in the sky, including green hues, due to various scattering effects of sunlight. Our adventure starts at the secluded hamlet of Ukko-Luostontien in Luosto. In Finland, traditional wooden houses are often referred to as "wooden cabins" or "wooden chalets." The Finnish word for a wooden house is puutalo. We are walking on the ridge of fjells Ukko-Luosto along the primeval forest in the area. The snow here resembles an untouched white carpet, with trees draped in a thick layer of powder snow. Every step disrupts the serene silence of the snowy surroundings; the crunching sound of fresh snow under my hiking boots fills the air. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow, and nature here in Luosto appears to be in a deep winter slumber. .

The title of one of the entries to
an Ice Carving Competition held in Fairbanks, Alaska in February.
This year, because of a blow up between the organizers of years past, there is a new competition site. We bought passes that enabled us to come and go through out the competition. It was fascinating to see the "one block", "two block" and "multi-block" devisions start and progress, culminating in some spectacular art.

Fairbanks, Alaska. Spent a very entertaining day watching the sprint races held over the weekend at the Musher's Hall. This shows a Skijoring racer coming back from the out loop. Watchers look for them to come out of the trees on the right, cross the area in front of the Hall and then come charging up the hill to the finish line. Lotta fun.
