Fairbanks, Alaska. Spent a very entertaining day watching the sprint races held over the weekend at the Musher's Hall. This shows a Skijoring racer coming back from the out loop. Watchers look for them to come out of the trees on the right, cross the area in front of the Hall and then come charging up the hill to the finish line. Lotta fun.

This isn't the leading lines photo that I wanted, but the weather just hasn't been cooperative, and that idea is totally weather dependent. So after teaching this morning, I wandered bit and came across this. I've always know this view was here, and now that the bridge has been lit with LED's, of course I'll be back at night. But it works for a leading lines assignment, so here's my contribution for this week.

The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow, and nature appears to be in a deep winter slumber. We plan to climb its spectacular fjells (mountains) and explore its pristine wilderness.

As we skied back to the ski chalet at the end of the lesson, the sun finally poked out from behind the clouds. Most of the kids probably didn't notice the sun, their eyes were looking down trying to keep the blowing snow off their faces, and their minds were probably thinking about the hot chocolate and snacks waiting for them in the chalet. The young skier in the foreground stopped skiing to take in the beauty of the sun and the blowing snow, and caught my eye.

It is celebrated for its stunning natural surroundings, winter activities, and the Pyhä-Luosto National Park. In January, daylight hours are very short due to the polar night, a phenomenon occurring in areas above the Arctic Circle, including Lapland. We embarked early in the darkness on our journey to Luosto. The snow here resembles an untouched white carpet, with trees draped in a thick layer of powder snow. Every step disrupts the serene silence of the snowy surroundings; the crunching sound of fresh snow under my hiking boots fills the air. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow, and nature appears to be in a deep winter slumber. Due to avalanche danger, we couldn't climb the eastern side of Mount Ukko-Luosto. Starting from the ski resort, we now plan to climb the mountain from the northern side, a 6.5 km route. A challenging ascent leads to the Ukko-Luosto Scenic Hut, a great place to take a break and enjoy the view.

Each winter the historic Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is transformed into a 7.8-kilometre skating rink. The world-famous skateway winds it way through the heart of Ottawa, stretching from downtown to Dows Lake. The Rideau Canal skate season typically runs from January to late February.

Chaque hiver, l’historique canal Rideau, un site du patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO, devient une patinoire longue de 7,8 kilomètres. Cette patinoire de renommée mondiale sillonne le cœur d’Ottawa, du centre-ville jusqu’au lac Dows. En règle générale, la saison de patinage sur le canal Rideau dure de janvier à la fin février.

The hill below the windmill at Fabyan Park in Batavia, Illinois is a popular and scenic sledding location. If there's snow, there will be people out enjoying the day here
While I was out globby hunting the other day, I happened across this globby bravely wandering about on the snow. It's not a patch on my previous globby upload, which is by far my most viewed photo on Flickr so far---thank you... but I thought it was neat that this one was walking through the snow :)

Dicyrtomina are typically winteractive Collembola. They have a kind of antifreeze blood. It allows them to stay active while most other arthropods can hardly move.
