History
Rayleigh Windmill was built in 1809 for Thomas Higgs, a timber merchant of Rayleigh. Higgs was bankrupt in 1815 and the mill was sold to William Hart of Woodham Mortimer in 1817. Hart sold the mill to George Britton in 1845 and the mill passed to his sons John and Samuel in 1869. £150 was spent putting the mill into repair. The Britton brothers left Rayleigh in 1884 and were bankrupt in 1886. Thomas James Brown was the next miller, and the last to work the mill by wind c1907. The cap and sails were removed c1909 and the mill was worked by a steam engine then an oil engine and latterly by electric motor until at least 1937.
The mill was taken over for use as a museum by Rayleigh and District Antiquarian and Natural History Society, formally opening on 16 May 1970. The capless mill stood for many years with a crenellated top but in 1972 Rayleigh Urban District Council launched an appeal to restore the mill as a landmark. By the autumn of 1974 a new cap and sails had been made and fitted by millwrights John Lawn and Philip Barrett-Lennard.
In 2005, restoration work costing £340,000 was funded by the Thames Gateway South Essex Partnership.
Tower windmill. 1877 by Saunderson of Louth. Restored 1970 and 1981 by the Department of the Environment. Tarred brick. Ogee cupola with small ball finial. Fan-tail and 6 double sided sails. Dentil and moulded eaves. 5 storeys with decorative wrought iron balcony to the second floor. South side with doorway 6 steps up with plank double door, on the second floor is a cambered arched doorway with part glazed door. The north side with similar doorway and door to the second floor. The west and east sides both with single pivotal casements under cambered arches on each floor. Interior. Internal machinery in full working order. Elevator to hurst which terminates in a hopper on the first floor. Spout down to the ground floor. First floor with tentering gear and spouts, machinery also includes bridge tree, governor, spindle with mace head and gimbal bar. Second floor with hopper, vat, quant, runner stone and two pairs of restored grey stones and single pair of French stones. Great spur wheel with upright shaft all of iron, this drives through mortice stone nuts. Fifth floor with iron sack hoist and chain. Brake wheel, wallower, brake and brake lever all of iron. Another one of Jill windmill at Clayton, this time taken over the top of a tall gate (using Live View ... I wasn't on a ladder!) because I was there on a day it wasn't open to the public.
A windmill is a mill that converts the energy of wind into rotational energy by means of vanes called sails or blades. Centuries ago, windmills usually were used to mill grain (gristmills), pump water (windpumps), or both.
Ashton windmill is a Tower mill in Chapel Allerton, Somerset, England. Its tower is over 7.5 metres (25 ft) high with stone walls that are 60 cm (2.0 ft) thick. The sails are 13 m (43 ft) across and used to be covered with canvas. The last millstones were 1.2 m (3.9 ft) across and the millstones used to grind wheat for flour and beans for cattle food.
The first mill on the site was medieval, but the present structure probably dates from the 18th century. It was modernised in 1900 with machinery brought from the demolished Moorlinch mill, and iron hoops around the building being added. It was restored in 1967. The mill has been designated by English Heritage as a grade II listed building.
It is now preserved, having been given to Bristol City Museum in 1966 and is owned by Sedgemoor District Council, and maintained by volunteers.
In 2008 the council applied for listed building planning consent to undertake major restoration work on the windmill, including replacement of the stone steps, installation of hand rails, guard rails and safety bars, alterations to the window shutters and replacement of the sail frames with wood laminate.
In 2010 Sedgemoor Council decided it could no longer afford to maintain the windmill and has appealed for an independent group of trustees to take on the responsibility for the building.
Kinderdijk is a village in the the Netherlands' South Holland province, known for its iconic 18th-century windmills. Its water-management network features 19 mills and 3 pumping stations, plus dikes and reservoirs that control flooding in the polder (low-lying land). Waterways, footpaths and bike trails crisscross the area, leading to the main visitors center and museums in preserved working windmills.

I passed by all of these wind turbines on my way to and from the highway to get to Dusseldorf and Cologne. There are maybe two dozen in this immediate area, and I decided I needed to get a few pictures of them before I returned home from this trip. So, one afternoon I parked my car on the side of the road and quickly found myself in some farmer's fields.
One of the excellent things about Germany is that there is little sprawl; towns are tightly packed with lots of open space between them. Paths through farms seem to be all public use; there were people walking dogs and even a couple riding horses.
I originally envisioned this shot as a sort of cliched joke; what "green" company doesn't have windmills and plants on their brochure covers? I think I like the juxtaposition in the end, though. One major problem that really bothers me is, due to the perspective and wide angle lens, the horizon looks straight but the windmill appears to be crooked.
