Wilton Windmill stands high above the small village of Wilton, near Marlborough in Wiltshire, on a site that provides magnificent views of the surrounding hills. The mill was originally constructed in 1821 when the construction of the Kennet and Avon canal meant that local watermills were no longer viable.
the blades were on the ground nearby, waiting to be mounted. This mill still grinds corn but does not run in the winter.
On the edge of town there were four old windmills that were still standing. You could even go INSIDE this one, which was very exciting for me.
26 April 13. I had to go into Brighton to have a document sealed by a Notary Public. The only time she could see me was 5.30, so I had to drive home in the rush hour.
This is a journey I made for too many years, and for some reason I never tried to take photos along the route (I used to car share).
Even though there is now a bus lane, I was stationary on the run into Rottingdean, so I wound down the passenger window to take a snap of the windmill.
This is straight out of the camera - not even cropped.
Caught this windmill just west of where I live near sunset. I loved how a local hawk has found a new use for it.
In Northern Germany, the windmills resemble what you would expect to see in Holland. This one, in particular had been gutted and was being remodeled on the inside.
Up close to Rottingdean Smock mill. Unfortunately not a lot is left of its interior although the remains of the fantail are still stored within. A modern tubular steel skeleton supports what is left of the old mills structure
The Prairie Mills Windmill was built in 1872 and is the only smock mill that still has the original stones and gears in place. Open for tours. 217-696-2360
Located at 902 Prairie Mills Road, Golden, IL 62339.
I never knew of this windmill's existence till I came upon it at 4am. Needless to say I was quite surprised-so very Dutch in the Somerset countryside! I later returned at dawn to photo it.
After quite some time I decided to play with it (skew,S curve ect) and stick it on Flickr.

Cromer Windmill – Hertfordshire’s sole surviving windmill and a grade II* listed building dates from 1681, as determined by a dendrochronological survey conducted in 1998. It stands on an artificial mound just outside Cromer, near Ardeley, in which parish a windmill has stood for nearly 800 years.
Although blown over around 1860, Cromer Windmill was re-built and used until the 1920’s when milling by wind became uneconomic and the mill fell into disrepair. Apart from some repairs conducted in 1938 and sails having already been removed for safety, nothing further was done to the mill until an appeal in 1964 from concerned local people to save the windmill.
Restoration of Cromer Windmill and its internal machinery has taken more than 30 years to complete. Many organisations, including much support from local people, assisted with raising funds and restoration work.
The rudder sail of the windmill at Wilton in Wiltshire. It's surprising how well ballanced the whole revolving top of the windmill is. With only a very light breeze that day any slight movement of the sail easily moved the top dome and main sails. The rest in the series can be viewed on my stream. Thanks for visiting.
