Don't say I don't suffer for my art. In between brief showers of rain, I noticed spectacular sun rays appearing over this windmill, so I grabbed my camera and ran over to catch the moment. Unfortunately, I slipped on a wet wooden step on the dike and crashed down on my lower leg. I've never known pain quite like it, yet I hobbled on with my quest. However, I'd missed the passing rays and was left with the cloud.
The leg is still quite painful. I had it x-rayed yesterday and no breaks were found so I just have to wait for the pain to go. No one understands what we artists suffer.
A windmill is a mill that converts the energy of wind into rotational energy by means of vanes called sails or blades. Centuries ago, windmills usually were used to mill grain (gristmills), pump water (windpumps), or both.
I was driving toward Roswell, NM when I saw the sun going down and this windmill. I had to RUN like crazy to get on the right side. But this was the payback. It may be the best picture I've ever taken

Windmill "de Zandweg" in Rotterdam-Charlois is a flour mill built in 1723. In 1959 the municipality of Rotterdam bought this mill and restored it completely. In 1962 the restoration was completed. The mill is in operation regularly and is open to visitors.

My contacts will recognise this shot, I took a few shots of this windmill a few months back (see below). It became my most popular shot on Flickr. One of the comments made on the shot was that a wider lens would have worked better. The original (below) was taken with a 17-85mm, and this shot was taken with a 10mm lens. I used the same processing to try and recreate the shot. I cant decide which I prefer, I think the shy and shadows of the sails work best in the original but the wider angle is perhaps more striking.. Ill let you decide ;)
Some Info on the Mill:
Sir Rowland Blennerhassett (a well known Tralee character) built the Blennerville Windmill in 1800, by 1846 the windmill had fallen in ruins. In 1981 the Tralee Urban Council purchased the windmill and has developed it as a tourist attraction.
Blennerville Windmill is a living reminder of Ireland’s rich industrial heritage. Featured in the Guinness Book of Records as the “ largest working windmill” in Great Britain and Irelan, visitors are guided by the miller through each element of the four making process.
The windmill stands on a hill overlooking the Roman Fosse Way and the village of Chesterton. It is cylindrical in shape and constructed in limestone, dating from 1632.
Wanted to do some long exposures with this windmill, the sky was just not right for it so here's a non long exposure.

The windmill has been built by one man in his backyard. For the wings he used the parts from old Russian helicopter that his neighbor was keen giving him as part of some deal between them.
There is also a mini museum inside the windmill.

The Dutch have become very innovative when it comes to keeping out the water. They have built dykes, fortifications and last but not least wind and watermills to create new land. The oldest mill is a watermill that dates back to the eighth century. These techniques were used to pump dry hundreds of lakes and swamps and to prevent land from flooding. Today, windmills are characteristic of the Dutch landscape and a symbol of the Dutch struggle with water.
