gale force winds and sheets of water forced me inside - to witness the emerging sun across the river.
We came back to our room and found this guy hanging out. Without looking too closely, we requested assistance from a kasbah employee. He was quick to point out that it was not venomous and actually quite harmless. He referred to it as a desert cricket. After a little research, I am pretty sure it is a Solpugid (aka Wind Scorpion or Sun Spider).

This photo doesn't convey the full craziness of the wind in Seattle today. Getting over the bridge was an hour-long ordeal, because nobody wanted to go faster than 5 - 10mph. You could feel the bridge shifting from side to side beneath the car, and the surf was high enough to break over the sides of the bridge. I'm surprised that they didn't shut it down.

A pronghorn walking on the prairie of the Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota. Although resembling the African antelope, and often called "antelope" in old Western songs and literature, the pronghorn is only a distant relative, and in the old world, actually more closely related to the giraffe.

I often take U.S. 41 from Chicago to my ancestral homeland in Kentucky, but car troubles born last summer in California had kept me away since January. I finally returned about three weeks ago in the middle of the night and found a huge array of flashing red lights where empty prairie should have been, a hundred radio tower lights spread our across the darkness south of Kentland where before I'd seen nothing, all flashing in some sort of strange, surreal synchronization.
They weren't radio tower lights, as it turned out. They were 87 windmills installed sometime in the winter or spring. Today, I went back to take pictures.
It wasn’t easy keeping my new camera as steady as I did - and for as long as I did - in this video - with the wind gusts nearly knocking me over onto my backside.
