Upon seeing the whitewashed building in the NY Daily News a sudden dose of disbelief struck me and made me hop on a 7 train Court Sq. bound only to find the site in person was far more depressing then i could've ever imagined. Writers and spectators from the neighborhood alike all huddled in the middle of the 5 Pointz lot looking in awe at the destruction of a decade's worth of hard work in one night. It felt like i was at a funeral. What made it worse was the knowledge that all this was done to prep for the construction of yet another tall gleaming boring high rise with rents no regular New Yorker can ever afford...
Photographed during a springtime visit to the nearby town of Saline on May 11, 2012. The Braun Farm is one of the most beautiful in Washtenaw County and is located less than a mile to the east of Saline.

Rimetea (formerly Trascău; Hungarian: Torockó; German: Eisenmarkt, Eisenburg) is a commune located in Alba County, Romania. It is composed of two villages, Colțești (formerly Sângeorzul Trascăului; Torockószentgyörgy; Sankt Georgen) and Rimetea. A former mining town, today it is known as the location of the Piatra Secuiului mountain and as a Székely cultural center. In 1999 the village was awarded the Europa Nostra award.
Amy, Danny (& later) Therese took on the major project of emptying a very disorganised basement and painting it with limewash.

Marpha village, between Tatopani and Jomsom, on the Annapurnas road (Nepal)
View my other photos of Marpha.
Unlike other villages in the Kali Gandaki valley, Marpha has been "beautified" for the tourists trekking on the Annapurnas route.
Stone houses are all nicely whitewashed. Many houses on the main street have been converted into shops selling souvenirs and supplies.
It is pretty, but much less authentic than Kagbeni, another old village further up in the valley.

Why does she turn in that shy soft way
Whenever she stirs the fire,
And kiss to the chimney-corner wall,
As if entranced to admire
Its whitewashed bareness more than the sight
Of a rose in richest green?
I have known her long, but this raptured rite
I never before have seen.
- Well, once when her son cast his shadow there,
A friend took a pencil and drew him
Upon that flame-lit wall. And the lines
Had a lifelike semblance to him.
And there long stayed his familiar look;
But one day, ere she knew,
The whitener came to cleanse the nook,
And covered the face from view.
"Yes," he said: "My brush goes on with a rush,
And the draught is buried under;
When you have to whiten old cots and brighten,
What else can you do, I wonder?"
But she knows he's there. And when she yearns
For him, deep in the labouring night,
She sees him as close at hand, and turns
To him under his sheet of white.
Stunning modern architecture in Renon, near Bolzano. This is a private house owned by a local doctor. The house is probably a self build.
Whitewashed furnishings, wall mirror, touches of pink, lovely bedding and touches of French country.
The Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, is known for its Mediterranean beaches and golf resorts. Whitewashed fishing villages on low cliffs overlooking sandy coves were transformed in the 1960s, and now its central coast between Lagos and Faro is lined with villas, hotels, bars and restaurants. The region's western Atlantic coast and rugged interior are less developed.

12th century parish church, reconstructed in 1439 by Adam Hepburn of Hailes. Cruciform plan church with N aisle added 1832; S transept restored by Robert Rowand Anderson in 1894 and again by Robert Lorimer in 1914-7 after a suffragette attack (fire) of 1914. Coursed red sandstone. Pointed arch Y-traceried windows. Large crowstepped porch with battered angle buttresses and pinnacles. Arched nave windows with cusped Y-tracery. Crowstepped S transept to right of ashlar (Anderson) and coursed stone (Lorimer) with ashlar battered angle buttresses and oculus in gable head; pairs of square headed, 2-light windows with perpendicular tracery on W return. Buttressed chancel with 3-light traceried window. Dominating 3-stage square tower with dividing string courses and corbelled parapet. Pointed arch windows with simple Y-tracery to upper stages on all faces. Slate pyramid roof with cockerel weathervane.
From the 1300s miracles began to be reported by people drinking at a nearby well and Whitekirk quickly became a major centre for pilgrimage. Following his survival from a shipwreck, Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini visited prior to becoming Pope Pius II. Name of Whitekirk stems from former whitewashed walls. Oliver Cromwell stabled horses in church, while attacking Tantallon.
Suffragette fire caused considerable damage, destroying the entire roof, windows (the only medieval tracery left is in the S window) and most of the interior furnishings. Photo of burnt out church available online.

Whitewashed paved alleyway with blossom flowers, bright-painted wooden doors and passerby. Mykonos town, Mykonos island, Cyclades, Greece
Still present on January 1, 2015, but the unusual and distinctive pink color was gone from the upper walls over the café area by January 3. Again, more stuff here that hasn't been changed, but I'm not going to point it out! No matter, that wall tile behind the drink stand was gone by January 6, 2014, as will be revealed in upcoming photos.
