This is a picture from my first trip to the White Pocket area near Page in Arizona in March 2009. I found it on my harddisk a couple of minutes ago and i hope you'll like it :-)
White Pocket, Arizona. Remote, sandy 4-wheel drive. Interesting area but not sure I would go back, there are other places as beautiful and not as hard to get to, camping out there is not that great either. Just my opinion.
"I do not need batteries to play" *) but imaging gear and the subject do. Watching my personal stationary storm Olaf throwing sparks into the desert below at night was a quite electrifying experience.

White Pocket, tucked within Vermilion Cliffs National Monument in northern Arizona, is a hidden gem of swirling sandstone, otherworldly rock formations, and vibrant colors. Its landscape—a mesmerizing blend of white, red, and orange sandstone—has been sculpted into domes, ridges, and brain-like textures over time. Adventurers are drawn to its alien beauty, where each turn reveals a new geological marvel. Its remote isolation enhances the mystique.

Panorama at White Pocket, Arizona. 10 images, 14 mm, f 2.0, 25 sec., ISO 12,800. I think this might be my first pano of the MW Arch in August. Typically I find the MW is too high to get onto a single row Pano by that time of year. Somehow I was able to fit the whole sweep of the MW onto a vertical 14 mm Pano. You can tell it is getting late in the MW season because the core has set relatively quickly during the night. There is still plenty on MW to see though! Note the Andromada Galaxy near the top of the frame, above the Milky Way, to the right.

Thanks for all the kind support! Hope you enjoy! A big thank you to the wonderful Flickr family. It's a pleasure to post here.
We were out at White Pocket the other night doing some Milky Way photography. My clients really liked it when my brother Ben posed on top of the hill in the background for nice scale. We had a beautiful, clear evening, but by morning some clouds rolled in and gave us a nice sunrise!
Explore Az Day 2/3 – This is another shot from my trip to the middle of nowhere Arizona. Every time I turned around there was some impressive rock formation. This wasn’t one of the most impressive rock formations but I love all the lines and the shadow of the tree.
Thanks for your interest in my work. Feel free to comment and/or follow me. I am happy to answer any questions.

A "leading lines" composition from white pocket, AZ, a photographer's playground. The clouds were also striated when the image was made which provided an unplanned balance between sky and stone.
Hope you like it as much as I did taking it!

I hadn't visited this area for six years. Glad I finally made it back. Kinda tough spot to get to, but worth the effort, especially after rains create these great puddles for reflections.
This shot is a follow-up to the one I posted a couple days ago from White Pocket. It's almost like monsoon season is coming early this year in July! You can see the storm bearing down on us in the distance. A small pocket of light managed to briefly break through the clouds and we were able to capture this stunning scene. It's days like this when I love being a photographer, and even better when my clients get to partake in the fun!
I was lucky to be here after very abnormal June rains which left many water pools through out the area. Now why did the sky have to be so uneventful? Oh well next time. 8^)

...throttling my account, and for a while now. You see, when I ended my tour with Yahoo a few years back it didn't end well. False accusations were being thrown at me by the person who was managing me, who pretty much wanted to end the job I was hired for before I even started the tour. The thing is this. The week before I went on tour with Yahoo, I had made it into Explore for the umpteenth time, but since returning home I had
noticed after a year that my images were not getting as many hits and hitting Explore was now a thing of the past. Sales generated from people seeing my pics up here dried up, and the hits generally are much fewer than before. Flickr, and Yahoo have a lot of bots that do things. They showed me a few I could use while on tour. Call me paranoid, but I have a suspicion that since I went out and worked for them that they applied one to my account. Pretty petty if so.
Anyway, this is a picture from White Pocket in Northern Arizona. A beautiful place. I only wish I could show more people these things....

The day's fading soft light shows off the Swirl in all its glory. Very windy so had to use a 6-stop ND filter to try to get rid of the "surf" in the pond. Visited the White Pocket with Action Photo Tours.
Tough to not imagine ancient formations lurking below the surface, only to be revealed with the passage of time and then eventually eroded away.
"White Pockets" is a colorful rock formation in the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument - Arizona USA about 3 miles from the Utah border.
The white parts of this area are called "brain rock".
A "pocket" in the Arizona desert is a depression in the rocks that fills with rain water.
This is in the "Arizona Strip", a large section of Arizona north of the Colorado River (Grand Canyon) only accessible by crossing the Navajo Bridge north of Flagstaff or going through Nevada and/or Utah.

White Pocket does not need snow to be the white princess it is, but a little bit of ice and snow does give it a boost. If you are wondering about the title, the frozen foam on the ice cold water looks like snowflakes, falling from below.
Rock seems to flow at the base of the White Pocket Castle. It is difficult to capture photographically the amazing geography of this place. I was hoping a three shot vertorama would help! A person standing in the upper right adds a bit of perspective.
A place which had its beauty to be visited back when it was not run over by hordes that do not know how to drive in deep sand and do not know how to behave out there in the wilderness. Now it is still wild country, but with wild people. The secret of visiting the place is to focus on the wilderness and try to forget everything else.

Somewhere deep in the Vermillion Cliff Wilderness is a place called White Pocket. Getting there is a challenge and only people that have the appropriate car should adventure there, otherwise you will end up stuck in the deep sand!
This is NOT and understatement!!!

The full moon sets toward South Coyote Buttes lit by the rising sun, and framed by formations at White Pocket populated by a couple of corvids (probably ravens, but possibly crows). (#3)
Thanks for all your comments and favs- they are greatly appreciated, and Happy Easter
I spent the past week on the Paria Plateau, including a visit to White Pocket, a chaotic mix of twisted, folded, mutilated sandstone (Navajo, of aeolian origin). One of my favorite features (dubbed the "dragon's tail") is this series of ridges that has bands within bands, cuts, and alternate white and red layers. The scale here is difficult to determine- the actual scale is larger than it may seem- on the skyline in the middle you can see an old fence line. The photo is shot right at sunrise, so the light is a wee bit harsh, but the colors are true. Stacked using 3 images for sharper focus throughout. (#2)

If you don't already recognize it, this is White Pocket! With beautiful lines and textures, it's one of my favorite places to photograph. I took this during our Southwest Expedition with Photopills in 2022. A lenticular cloud structure developed over the rock formations along with some spotlighting. When I sat down to work on the image, it just screamed for a monochrome treatment.
As a co-founder and organizer of the Outsiders Photography Conference, I'll be heading back to the Southwest soon. I look forward to seeing many familiar faces in Kanab, March 3-5! Message me if you'd like to join us last minute .

This place behind the famous "Lollipop Rock" offers a great view of the Monolith at White Pocket but lacks foreground. Determined not to give up, I contorted my body (and tripod) on the sloped sandstone to create leading lines and two bumps on the horizon. The light assisted in keeping the shot balanced. At least so I think ...
