Infinity because the White Pocket is infinitely beautiful. Infinity because it has infinitely many compositional possibilities. Infinity for the third time because it took nearly infinite time to form itself. Infinity and beyond.
For World Photography Day- a word of thanks. Thankfulness for a wide world of wonders to capture in the shutter of my camera and thankfulness for having my art appreciated.
"White Pockets" is a colorful rock formation in the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument - Arizona USA about 3 miles from the Utah border.
The white parts of this area are called "brain rock".
A "pocket" in the Arizona desert is a depression in the rocks that fills with rain water.
This is in the "Arizona Strip", a large section of Arizona north of the Colorado River (Grand Canyon) only accessible by crossing the Navajo Bridge north of Flagstaff or going through Nevada and/or Utah.
White Pocket is NOT an easy place to get to. You have to WANT to go here. The drive is long and challenging, and then there is a small bit of a hike. Bring water.
But once there, the surroundings are incredible! One could easily spend the entire day here, exploring, climbing, and taking in the dynamic landscapes. As the light changes, so does EVERYTHING! Grey whites, sage green, honey golds, tangerine oranges, dry dirt brown, and Arizona reds-- the color palette is stunning. Definitely worth all the trouble getting here :).

White Pocket, Arizona. Not the best light, but it's always fun to find a pool of water in the desert and get a reflection shot.
A cow decided to join us for sunset one evening at White Pocket. I don't know about you, but I'm surprised that they still allow cattle ranching at White Pocket. You would think this area is equally deserving of protection as Coyote Buttes. What do you guys think?
I was gifted with some awesome poofy clouds and large pools of water for my first ever visit to White Pocket. They made for some really cool shots 😊
White Pocket is such a great place for night photography, which is one reason why I get so many requests to organize overnight trips. Here's a shot we got last month on a particularly calm night. There was a slight film on top of the water which you can see if you look closely. But luckily for us, the wind was very calm. For the critics out there, I know that this image isn't level with the horizon. I did this on purpose since I find that the eye cares more about the background peaks looking level than if the reflection lines up vertically. The image looks off-kilter when perfectly level.
Early morning light reflects the Citadel, as golden hour ebbs over the crest of the Citadel to brightened the Monolith. Learn more about this photo from my website expose post.
At twilight, at dusk, White Pocket takes on a life of its own as the colors deepen, the landscape softens, and a dreamlike quality settles over the quiet of the desert.
Happy Friday! We've been getting some great clouds and a few storms recently. Here's a shot from an outing to White Pocket a couple days ago. Capturing daytime lightning is not easy without a lightning trigger. During this storm, we noticed that the first bolt of lightning was almost always followed by a second bolt. I told my clients to wait until they saw the first bolt and then take several quick shots after that in hopes of a follow-up bolt. Sometimes you'll get lucky!
My client and I arrived in White Pocket just after a heavy thunderstorm. Nobody else was there and we had a nice rainbow to photograph for about an hour. With all the rain, there were pools where I've never seen them before. This shot is one such example, taken during twilight. We later got up at 2AM and the skies were perfectly clear to shoot the Milky Way. By 4AM clouds rolled back in and we got some nice sunrise color. You can't really ask for more perfect photography weather than this!
On our vacation to Utah we took a trip to White Pocket, Arizona. It was a very beautiful place, with amazing and unique landscape of sandstone. We were going to rent a 4x4 but decided to hire a guide from Dreamland Safari Tours out of Kanab Utah www.dreamlandtours.net/ . Our guide was Andrea, she was great.

When I travel around the Southwest during monsoon season, this is the kind of drama I hope to capture. Very pleased it worked for me on this occasion. Thanks for looking!

After a rainy evening the sky suddenly cleared at 2 am, allowing us to take the Milky Way nightscapes I was hoping for.
Of course we took advantage of the reflective pools left by the rain.
This image was taken at the same spot I photographed during golden hour: flic.kr/p/K21iyJ
It is a composite of 3 exposures:
- 180s @ ISO 1600 for the rocks
- 40s @ ISO 6400 for the reflection
- 20s @ ISO 6400 for the sky
Taming the shadows at white pocket is really an interesting experience. A lot of the area is deep in shadow way before golden hour, but the reflected light and shadows tend to accentuate the colors.

This is another shot of my overnight trip to White Pocket. After a rainy evening, there were reflective pools in very unusual places. This is one example of them.
This is a 5 image focus stack, a technique ensuring excellent sharpness at all depths. It was tought to me by David Swindler of ActionPhotoTours.com

While it's easy for focus on all the detail at White Pocket, sometimes you need to see a wider view.

“Don’t shoot in bright sunlight and with intense shadows!!!”
Okay, but then how do you accurately capture the intensity of the desert? And these colors? And this light?
Do what you want.
A Utah and Arizona, you are in the Navajo Nation. In Navajo, sacred land is referred to as Diné Bikéyah. This land belongs to the people. Hopitutskwa, Pueblos, and Núu-agha-tʉvʉ-pʉ̱ (Ute) land is also found across these two states and at archeological sites and natural sites. It is an honor to see them. White Pocket is most closely associated with Southern Paiute land.
