Once in the American Southwest:
a different view of what I consider to be the most beautiful rock formation of White Pocket / Vermilion Cliffs National Monument / Arizona.

White Pocket Mountain from my very "private" trailhead during sunrise (5:35 am).
I was there twice years ago and the first time I just barely managed to drive up the sandy track on the way back.
So I parked the SUV the 2nd time above the critical slope that leads down to the official trailhead and hiked across country to White Pocket for about 20 minutes.
In the next morning around sunrise I had this beautiful view of the mountain, glowing in the first light from above.
White Pocket Mountain from my very "private" trailhead during sunrise (5:36 am).
I was there alone years ago and was afraid I would get stuck in the deep sand. So I parked my SUV above the critical slope that leads down to the official trailhead and hiked across country to White Pocket for about 20 minutes. In the morning around sunrise I had this beautiful view of the mountain, glowing in the first light from above.

After exploring White Pocket for a few hours in the middle of the day, I went back to the jeep for a rest and a bite to eat. In the meantime high cirrus clouds moved in, so when I went out photowalking again towards sunset the light was soft.
On my second visit to the White Pocket Mountain area, I parked in a small bay above the treacherous sandy track and hiked from there to the beautiful rock formations in about 20 minutes. On the way through the desert across country you have the view as in the picture above.

White Pocket was just a fascinating little spot in the desert. I truly felt like I’d stepped onto an alien world. Just an amazingly beautiful place!
A striking rock formed by sand and wind.
A deep dig into the archive: when you could still spend 2 days completely alone in the vicinity of White Pocket ...
For me, White Pocket in the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument is one of the most fascinating landscapes in the American Southwest, the colors of the sandstone there are unsurpassed.
White Pocket im Vermilion Cliffs National Monument ist für mich eine der faszinierensten Landschaften im Südwesten der USA, die Farben des Sandsteins dort sind unübertroffen.

Greater White Pocket area, very fragil, therefore without coordinates, hope you understand.
I was looking for another photospot when I suddenly stood in front of this slightly overhanging wall that shone in many warm and cold colors in the indirect light of the early afternoon. The wall is several meters high and about 20 meters wide. Apparently, wind and sand have cleared the rock layers over many years.
This is a place with endless possibilities of composition and light effects. Each minute the textures, shadows and colors are changing. The photographers on the middle left (that was capturing a famous image of that last sunlight over the rock formation reflected in a pool just in front of it) give a sense of scale to the place.

These are some of the namesake white sandstone formations of White Pocket, in the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, northern Arizona
After several days of shooting with David Swindler, he kindly invited me to join his group out to White Pocket. WP has been at the top of my list for several years, so thanks to David I was able to strike that one off my list. That's Cody Wilson way off in the background, I happened to look up from my composition and noticed he was going to have to remove me from his photo if I didn't high tail it out of his shot. So I fired off a couple so that he would lend a sense of scale to the scene. Had a lot of fun shooting here but if you show up during the day its not nearly as impressive as dusk. All the textures start to pop out and the sandstone glows in the twilight. Had a great time and met some really nice people.
For a great photography adventure at the best times of the day or night, look no further than ActionPhotoTours.com, David is an award winning accomplished landscape photographer, and all around nice guy.

I'd seen pictures of White Pocket in the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument in northern Arizona from my flickr friends and decided I had to go there. I rented a 4WD vehicle in Page, Utah to get out there and it was expensive but definitely worth it to see this amazing place.
Wishing all my flickr friends health, happiness and lots of great photography in 2023.

A sunset view at White Pocket. The Sun was about to drop below the horizon while painting the Earth gold. The geology at this place is simply amazing.
One of the most fantastic place in the world located in Arizona.

I just got a few minutes of sunlight through a break in the clouds in the late afternoon at White Pocket in the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument. Of course I was hoping for a nice sunset but that didn't happen the day I was there, so I may have to go back.
