This is the Italian quarry with the biggest ratio total weight of the equipment / number of the machines I suppose...

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was scheduled to display models at Model Show Europe, which is dedicated to models of cranes, heavy haulage and earth movers. Sadly the event was cancelled, but hopefully the event will take place next year. This delay has one advantage: I have more time to build new models, including this one. So that I don't have to just plonk the truck on a table, I've built a bit of road to go underneath.

The stepframe trailer is modelled after a design by the Dutch manufacturer Nooteboom. These come in a lot of different versions; some with hinging ramps and some where the ramps are separate. Mammoet seems to mainly use the latter variety, probably because they sometimes carry loads that stick out over the rear end.
The truck is modelled after vehicles used by the Dutch Mammoet, which specialises in heavy lifting and transport of oversized and heavy objects. By their standards, this is actually a fairly small vehicle and load.

All models feature various remote controlled functions using SBricks and Power Functions components.
Diesel-electric wheel loader
The prototype featured a 22-cubic-yard bucket and was suited to load 150 to 170 ton haul trucks like the Euclid R-170.
My model in scale 1:28.5 has all the functions of the original:
- All-wheel drive with planetary gear reduction in each wheel hub using two PF XL motors
- Articulated steering by means of two linear actuators powered by a PF M motor
- Pneumatic lift arm with four-cylinder pump, driven by a PF L motor and PF Servo actuated valve
- Pneumatic bucket with four-cylinder pump, driven by a PF L motor and PF Servo actuated valve
- Oscillating rear axle
- Work and rear lights using four pairs of PF LEDs in total
The wheel loader is remote controlled using PF speed remotes and three PF receivers, one of which is a V2.

Another cool piece of equipment that I was able to photograph at the 2017 Construction Expo (CONEXPO) in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is a Volvo L350H Wheel Loader that is capable of loading 10-14 cubic yards or material at one time with its 540 HP, 16 L, 6 cyl engine and massive bucket.
Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D7200 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6.

For long loads, the trailer can be extended. The travel on my model is much more limited than the real deal, mainly because the beam interferes with the rear wheels. However, keeping the bed of the trailer low was more important to me than this functionality.

The train is already unloaded, it will only take a few seconds for the train to return to the coal mine. Only the wheel loaders are still busy pushing the spoil over the edge of the dump.
