Day 76 of 2015. I share a desk at WeWork SOMA with my friend, Amy Wu. Today, we took a tour of the newest WeWork location right next to the Transbay Terminal. It's still under construction, but we got a sense of what the new offices will look like and caught some outstanding views of the city.

Morning strength training (pull conditioning). Followed by a comedy of errors trying to get 150 programs across the county. I turned in a 35lb box of programs to be overnighted 1 minute before the deadline- wow, it's expensive to overnight things.

Finished the day with an HPA board sub-committee meeting and drinks at the WeWork space. Met Francisco, who moved to the states from Mexico 8 years ago and apparently knows the Carfree Cities folks I met in Guadalajara, because the world is really small.

Trip to Washington DC for Catering Staff Meeting

[02/10/2017]

These steps in WeWork are kinda fun and a little cliche, aren't they?

Very slow start to the day, after not getting up until 6:30. I spent a ton of the day on internet fuckery. reading, and at the gym, instead of cleaning out my inbox or doing good work on the business.

Last day of #pdxstartupweek led me and Aaron to make a trip downtown for networking events, which was fun. I'm now done with people for a bit.

July 2019's theme was END.

Thanks so much to Nicework and WeWork The Link for helping us put it all together!

Thanks so much to Kubili Media House for the photos!

“The secret about ‘the end’ is that it actually contains countless possibilities.”

Our Rio de Janeiro chapter chose this month’s exploration of End and Isadora Zeferino illustrated the theme.

Here's a little bit more about our speaker -

Roberto Pombo is a Johannesburg based theatre-maker, educator and performer. He graduated with an Honours degree in Dramatic Arts from WITS University in 2008 and went on to complete a three year intensive training at the acclaimed Helikos International School of Theatre Creation.

Some of his performance credits include Robin Orlin’s Dressed to Kill, Kill to Dress; Jerome Bel's Shirtology; Jemma Kahn's We Didn't Come To Hell For The Croissants; The Play That Goes Wrong, directed by Alan Committie; and Sam Shepard’s Curse of the Starving Class, directed by Sylvaine Strike. He also plays with Anthea Moys on his off days.

Robaby Productions, his theatre company which was created in 2015 with his collaborators Joni Barnard and Toni Morkel, have produced the award winning Father, Father. Father!, which was invited to perform at the Amsterdam Fringe Festival in 2016, and the cult-hit KidCasino!, which has been touring since 2017. Roberto’s passion for theatre is strongly routed in the world of the clown, bouffon and the grotesque.

He recently completed his Masters dissertation in theatre through Wits University and went on to attend a three month pedagogic training at Helikos under the direction of world-renown theatre master, Giovanni Fusetti.

Today we had a happy hour party at our office in WeWork Golden Gate with a bunch of other startups in the building. Du organized everything, came up with the idea to be a Brazilian themed party and in typical Wonolo style, teach people how to do a job (make a Caipirinha) in 5 minutes. It was amazingly popular and surprised me how many people turned out. Awesome job Du - now the two of us just need to get better shirts like everyone else.

Day 8 of 2015. Amy and I spent the afternoon working out of wework, a coworking space in SoMa. We're packaging a lot of the work we did together last year so that we can share it more widely with the rest of the world. I loved the giant orange clock in this shot, which matched Amy's pants and backpack.

That was a headline in an article about Wework Stockholm that I read last week. It was cold inside and some of the lights had been turned off. I took this photo three days ago.

Health and sustainability are inextricably linked. Sick humans on a healthy planet are not more sustainable than healthy humans on a sick planet.

I applaud WeWork’s commitment to the environment. Climate Change is a threat to human health.

Unfortunately, becoming meat free for employees is not the most effective or science-based way to support this commitment.

At the same time that meat is not being catered by corporate events, there are copious quantities of insulinogenic and diabetogenic foods served and promoted within the premises. From a science perspective, the carbon emissions from agriculture in the United States are 10% of the total. The carbon emissions from health care in the United States are 10% of the total.

A population struggling to prevent insulin resistance (up by 41% in Washington, DC, 76% Nationally, 1.67 million people in MD/VA/DC have pre-diabetes or undiagnosed diabetes, most don’t know it) will create a most unsustainable environment for all, through increased use of pharmaceuticals and associated health care. See this image to see what happens to humans when they ingest these foods: www.flickr.com/photos/taedc/28943375057/

It’s estimated that the use of $200/month of pharmaceuticals equals the offset from going completely vegan in 1 year. Same for taking one (1) transcontinental flight.

A better, more science-based approach, is to implement a sustainable food policy that incorporates health and the environment together.
