Back Story- This photo was pure serendipity! I happened to be looking at a book of photography by Weegee, when I saw this girl taking photos in the library.
Without introducing myself or explaining my intent, I proceeded to ask “ von Dutch ( I don’t know her real name) if I could take photos of her holding the book of Weegee’s work who is noted for accosting random people to take quick photos.
Note the pink digital camera and the pink and black hat.
The Futuro house is a failed dream of Finnish design. Contains many details that cry out NOT to be made of plastic. Quite creepy to spend a few minutes in.

Atelier Ying Nyc, a study for Weegee's Portable Lab
moving further in the direction Weegee had started, that of his ingenious mobile photo lab in the trunk of his car, I propose this smaller custom digital camera designed to be reminiscent of Weegee's actual red 1938 Chevy coupe. In my research I was impressed by the height of the car, the length of its rear trunk, and the heft of the car, which must have been attractive indeed considering the clothes style and the modernistic taste of skyscrapers that were just built in that era. The camera body has built-in compartments of highly polished wood veneer, a black plastic shell, chrome and red radiator covers in an art deco stying and an expensive extra large, bright viewfinder with a 'prescient eye' triangle icon. Since every photographer spends most of his time looking at the back of his camera, so this design has two features which are sure to delight the eye of its main user: a back cover styled after the actual glove compartment from the Chevy Coupe, and behind that cover which lifts open like the trunk of car, are built-in compartments of highly polished wood veneer doors which house the pieces of equipment Weegee uses. They are numbered as follows:
1. a reporter's notebook kit with the all-important press card
and a tiny Polaroid printer with USB connection to the digital camera port.
2. a number of long cigars
3. Weegee's famous stamp and inkpad
4. an ultra tiny red USB radio
5. External flashgun attachment with a remote for the digital camera stored inside the grip.
6. Modern digital camera recessed inside the back dashboard. The settings for the digital camera will have to be preset.
This camera design allows Weegee to carry on many of his former work habits as if nothing much had changed at all. Weegee was highly technocratic for his time in the field of photography. He had expertise and the intellectual curiosity to move forward into experimental work in his later life. With this handheld digital camera-lab, he can develop photographs, hand out cigars to contacts, stamp his prints, monitor the police and ambulance radios, keep notes on site information, and be still be reminded of his red coupe, a car that in some ways symbolized the departure from his apprentice days learning tintype to his total independence as an artist.

Weegee, by-line name of Arthur Fellig, original name Usher Fellig, (born June 12, 1899, Złoczew, Austria-Hungary [now in Poland]—died Dec. 26, 1968, New York, N.Y., U.S.), photojournalist noted for his gritty yet compassionate images of the aftermath of New York street crimes and disasters
There was a gathering on the lightrail platform of first responders. I wanted an old journalistic effect. You know when the shot with the SpeedGraphic 4x5 and those large press flashbulb, gave a dramatic, stark frontal lighting, and the grain of the film added to the graphic quality of the monochrome.
That was Weegee's style, and what I sought to emulate.
Futuro 001
Futuro, or Futuro House, is a round, prefabricated house designed by Matti Suuronen, of which fewer than 100 were built during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The distinctive flying saucer like shape and airplane hatch entrance has made the houses popular among collectors. The Futuro is composed of fiberglass-reinforced polyester plastic, measuring 4 metres high and 8 metres in diameter.
The WeeGee Exhibition Centre, Tapiola, Espoo, Finland is a cornucopia of museums, exhibitions and events, includes five museums, a modern art gallery, a café and three museum shops. This building, originally designed as a printing house by architect Aarno Ruusuvuori, has been transformed into a unique exhibition centre for culture and different events. It contains over 20'000 square metres of living culture, art, exhibitions and events.
Futuro 001 has been owned by TV celebrity Matti Kuusla since its manufacture. It is worth noting that despite the 001 numbering this was not the first Futuro manufactured - the prototype was numbered 000 and that Futuro has been fully restored and is on display at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The Futuro has spent its life on a lakeside property in Hirvensalmi where, mainly because it has never had an electrical supply, it has been only used in a very limited way.

This came to me in a dream: Weegee stood in a coffee brown suit, and my friend and I took his picture. He was also signing autographs for people. The film holder of the camera held not only the negative but also previously developed pictures, amazingly. Weegee told me that this camera had a better portrait lens than a Schneider lens and this edition of Graflex camera was called the "Cobalt" which had its nameplate closer to the lens than the other models of the Crown Graphics.
Looking at my dream, my thinking is that Weegee focused upon the dead in part of his work. Joseph Cornell's fantasy ruminations of figures in the beyond are mostly cloaked behind deep cobalt blue glass, a symbol of the spiritual as well as a device to give an image a spiritual dimension.
My proposed design for the "Cobalt Graphic" follows the general idea of the Crown camera except:
1. I've removed the targeting loop and rangefinder and replaced them with an external viewfinder that memorializes the subject it focuses upon. This EVF design is made after the wonderful African Burial Ground National Monument in New York's lower Manhattan. The camera's viewfinder has a cowling that descends over its base to connect two triangular shapes, representing heaven and earth, an architectural view that takes place (my interpretation) when you descend the steps of the actual memorial. The EVF is lined with cobalt glass and black mirror glass. The cowling snaps up after the picture is taken by a cable connection.
2. this modified crown graphic is digitized. The focal plane film holder holds prints and its function is changed to be a simple dark-slide in front of the digital sensor.
3. the external flashgun is replaced with a lower voltage diffuse light that can stay on for much longer than a flash bulb (the dream of all graflex shooters)
4. Suitable filters and digital settings are provided to render photos to give the 'cobalt' look.
5. the graflex body is refinished to extend to accommodate a digital camera allowing the bellows to have a more normal looking extension as well as to move the digital shutter towards the front of the Graflex by a remote. This way the LCD of the digital camera can really look like a facsimile hood of the original crown.
Lastly but for me one of the first considerations, this design is drawn on 6"x 3.5" Mead Memo notebook paper, in the kind of notebook used by Diane Arbus (hers was black), another photographer concerned with otherworldly visions. Please also view my Weegee set of camera designs.

You may see some of the elements in the tablescape behind the drawing: water glass as optical prism (the obscura version) which would then entertain the idea of a Film Camera as a city plaza which might pose the idea of a Morandi tablescape as a composition of the elements. It's the scale of the design variants (and the optical paths) that allows one to muse on architecture and is the most interesting facet; whether a human scale is important in the realm of cameras as it is in architecture. Yes for camera obscura, no for a camera that shifts the viewer's perceptions (vistas) of reality irregardless of dimension. Which brings the question of whether a camera's function is as a portable window (vista) or a creator of space (experience)?
A lot of black gauze holds the stage pieces to each other as one unit which covers a light-tight enclosure that may shift in form. The front stage table centers the subject as a default sighting device. The closest cousin to this camera is a Speed Graphic. For this reason I categorize it with my other designs for Weegee the photographer.

My photographic studies have allowed me to trace back from Moriyama to photographers as Weegee in making new camera designs. I will be introducing Weegee camera variations soon but my Sunpet 826 variations will continue. Weegee's Speed Graphic (a camera I once owned and used for awhile) has an inspiring structure for design.
Meanwhile, the above rumination made over a mild morning Macanudo Lonsdale perhaps is reminiscent of elements in at least four cameras: the Linhof Technika, Nikon 35T, Contessa (1950), and an antique Kodak, all with four legs of course. The mysterious open side door just might be a tiny cricket cage, a very Asian feature!

My long awaited Daido Moriyama camera kit. Well worth the money (I stand to make no profit at all, this is the base price). Since I have no time nor resources to assemble this, I can draw it, in between diaper changes of my newborns..
Please note that this kit is for Mr. Moriyama and an assistant, who follows him at a discreet distance (1 block) filming him with my vintage Ying digitized camera. The assistant's equipment is at the bottom and left top areas.
Please also note that the price is for the actual assembled items. My drawings are priced far lower than this.

He really should shoot in Shinjuku too. However, this Chinatown is a place I want to visit soon. It is interesting, indeed it is"..

7. Famous Ying digitized vintage rugged man Bessamatic to record Mr. Moriyama's movements with in HD quality video on a Lumix GF2, with 2 spare batteries and 2 chips, each have 16GB's. This custom Ying "football" is carried a block away from Mr. Moriyama and is always ready for action. It is autographed by me as, "Ying the famous", a throwback to Moriyama's Weegee days. Very handy indeed.
8. British Schoolboy tin of quality toffee with hammer inside to break and eat. After the toffee is consumed, you can refill the tin with licorice from Finland.
9. Silver-plated hip flask for brandy, monogrammed with "DM", for those cold nights in Shinjuku.
10. Single cob of roasted corn in soy glaze. Since Mr. Moriyama doesn't often smoke cigars, this is about as close to a pensive snack in between cigarettes as I can find, or draw. Don't you love the cool texture? This alone should garner me a fave.
11. Carved rubber name stamp and red ink holder for stamping b&w prints to be sold.
12. French fountain pen. A sharpie pen to autograph cameras is included free and not shown. The assistant has it in his pocket at all times anyway.
13. Legendary black Ricoh GR1v 21mm film camera, insured by Lloyd's, with 2 rolls of Tri-X and 2 AA batteries.
14. Legendary Moriyama rugged man, cool Japanese brand wristwatch that doubles as a timer from his darkroom days
15. Lens polishing cloth in clear plastic case.
16. Mr. Moriyama's outer apparel of Blue-striped jacket, blue jeans, sneakers, hip bag, T-shirt and spare backup Ricoh GX100 are not shown nor offered for sale, although if you contact me, I can give you a confidential price list. It's about $900 more, as I can offer a Charles Tywitt wool jacket with an English cut as a handy substitute.
If you're a Daido Moriyama Fan, ask yourself, when you're all alone with your honest thoughts, in your heart of hearts, is there a better place to visit than Atelier Ying? I don't think so..:D

Of course you can just conceal a tiny camera inside of a hot dog bun, as was done for detective/spy cameras. Yet how much more sophisticated to have drop bed design with the characteristics of the iconic American sandwich?
Weegee would have loved this variant design for a 2x3 Baby Speed Graphic, where the drop bed forms a ramp nestling a pair of his extra long Nat Sherman custom cigars. A guillotine cutter works by turning the focusing screws. Tiny drawers below hold matches, humidifying element, and a 15-foot long string which pulls out in order to rapidly determine exact distances in dim shooting situations.
A vertical wave of yellow 'mustard' in Bakelite forms a haiku viewfinder exactly as the last design, reminiscent of a summertime Coney Island coaster, and near the location of the annual Hot Dog eating contests.

This fantastic vehicle originated in Octopussy and later was seen again very briefly in Die, Another Day.
The Alligator surveillance device is given an upgrade in this proposed design. Instead of being hung on a wall in Q's laboratory, it is made into a centerpiece, the ultimate humidor--- itself a tiny room or a most beguiling chaise longue for a most elegant smoking room. It is dedicated to the wonderful actor Pierce Brosnan.
Some of my James Bond designs are thoroughly modern enough, but most of them are set in Ian Fleming's era, or more accurately stated, at around time of his novel "Goldfinger", which employed a rather fully equipped Leica M3, by today's standards.
I set the stage this way to make the fantasies more palpable, enjoyable and to be experienced as reveries, kind of as a quasi-mirror image to Fleming, who created his stories under thick clouds of cigarette smoke fueled by many martinis before a manual typewriter inside a room on his island home he named Goldeneye. Fleming admitted in his letters to being a non-communicative husband who only lived for tomorrow, as opposed to his wife who was more of a traditionalist, but his personal style was nothing but escapist. My work is usually finished in a fraction of the time he used to write a novel. In this, I like to employ the metaphor of a camera here: my design is but a tiny viewfinder's image, perhaps taken as a hipshot at times or as a more studied portrait at other times.
The vehicle's base has been expanded and outfitted with a side opening. Mr. Brosnan could fit in the cockpit (which has a Leica M3 with flash gun and a Ricoh GR1, a much more sensible recon device, both perched on a tiny shelf) and look out of its mouth as was originally intended. It has a polished wood floor and pillow so that one could even read a book in this position whilst puffing away inside. For this reason the Cuban Cigars (over 60 boxes of vintage El Rey Del Mundo coronas and robustos) are kept behind glass on shelves. The main door opens with the assistance of a hydraulic lift and the manual from Q has been wisely substituted with a cigar journal. As an electronically humidified aging room inside an alligator, it is without parallel.

The Century Graphic is a cost-reduced Miniature Pacemaker Crown Graphic (2 1/4" x 3 1/4"). Made of ``Mahoganite,'' which is a kind of plastic. It comes with a highly-desirable Graflok back. It lacks a body-mounted shutter release.

Influenced, perhaps, by the famous record jacket for Supertramp's "Crisis? What Crisis?" album, almost every time I pass the Come-by-Chance oil refinery I take a picture, though at highway speed. (Uhh, I'm not the driver when I do this.) Of course, yes, I'd take better pictures if I were not driving by. But I take my opportunities as they come. Like Weegee: f/8 and be there.

This continues a series for cameras that were quickly made obscure by trends in technology (please also see the Nemean Lion as another example).
The 1947 Speed-O-Matic was extremely slow to use by modern standards and is the spiritual descendant of the Dubroni, an early camera that I have used as a paradigm for some of my designs.
One could consider the Speed-O-Matic as a Mini-Weegee camera or even a 'Toy' Weegee. It certainly does have a secure place in the camera world through my eyes.
I believe Weegee would have seen the Speed-O-Matic as a godsend were it not for the dodging effects he needed for his photojournalistic work. His developing process was also messier than the Speed-O-Matic which truly is a fast Weegee camera. If one had to develop but 30 or so photographs, the slowness of the process would hardly be noticeable. Even the shooting process would adapt itself easily.
My proposed designs for Weegee are a series that approach him from various directions.
By the time he developed photographs in his Chevrolet Coupe, he already had become a skilled darkroom technician and simply transferred this process to the outdoors, to the trunk of his car, as a kind of modern man with a can-do attitude.
This design brings him to a serene setting, and transports his rough and tumble darkroom-in-the-car concept to the smaller scale of a portable Dubroni (and a tiny version of it too), a much more precise and intimate experience. Weegee used his Speed Graphic as an enlarger which I also attempt to transform for the Speed-O-Matic. Indeed the Speed-O-Matic in its cool, sleek Bakelite appearance easily recalls Weegee's shiny coupe.
Using the idea of the Airstream Travel Trailer, this homage aims to please Weegee the automobile fan. The kit is a 1936 Teardrop trailer attachment and table which expands the camera-RV interior as a deluxe slide viewer.
Thus in the Airstream/Teardrop the modern day Weegee views and also displays his work in the same dark surroundings (here the table transforms the alley into an outdoor lounge) where he famously developed photographs for the press.

This is a portrait of Kapil Dhaundiyal who is a dancer at Kingdom of Dreams.
I took this picture as he was going on stage in order to perform in "Zangoora, the Gypsy Prince".
During the film shoot we used to leave all our gear on his make-up table and I have to admit that we were invading his space but he never complained about it.
On the contrary he was always smiling with a contagious happiness.
He is a great entertainer who is taking the stage with an amazing energy.
This young man is an inspiration and he doesn't know that he gives a lesson of life to anyone who crosses his path...

Dark Pit is more offensive and air based than normal Pit. It's pretty cool how he's usually the one to throw the first punch. I find it very entertaining when they fight just because even though they're fundamentally the same character, their playstyles are different enough to make every match interesting. I might have to upload a match sometime to show you what I mean.
