We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.

We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

A place without being

a thought without thinking

of what was then to see.

A frozen memory in synthetic colour

or black and white instead,

fantasy dreams in magazines

Had a nice sail over from Moorea initially, but slowly wind died down so I ended up motoring overnight, knowing I could top up in Bora Bora. At daybreak, I was passing Raiatea, with Bora Bora just visible in the distance. The wind came up as I reached the SW end of Bora Bora, so I was able to have a nice peaceful breakfast under sail, watching the surf crashing spectacularly onto the reef as I passed towards the well-marked reef passage into the lagoon.

I went over to the Bora Bora Y.C. just to see what the anchorage was like and then headed down to Bloody Mary's and picked up a buoy there. I was kindly offered help picking up the buoy by David & Mary ('Kismet') on a nearby boat who turned out to be fellow-members of the O.C.C. with several mutual friends. We all went for a relaxed lunch at a very pleasant hotel beach restaurant nearby (Bloody Mary's, surprisingly, being closed on Sunday). On the way, we passed a black pearl 'Farm' - the dark

'cultivated' pearls were fascinating colours and the lovely pearly shell halves were hanging everywhere - I couldn't resist the offer of being given some... (shells, not pearls!)

Back at the boats, we found S. African friends of David & Mary had turned up - so I ended up with yet another highly sociable evening .... and late to bed. (I think I need to get to sea again to get some rest...!!)

Although there are clearly lots of hotels and tourist development here, it's all fairly low-level and doesn't seem to me to detract from the scenery too much - not from the water, at least.

Today I'm making use of my last chance to get on Internet for a time and then I'll be going to refuel and clear out from French Polynesia before heading towards Niue - a 9-10 day passage with the possibility of a stop midway in the lee of an island if I fancy it & if it's not overnight when I get close - I'll see - it's often simpler to keep on going, once you're in 'passage mode'! The forecast is for light winds for several days so the passage may take longer anyway - another good reason not to

stop.

I'd better send this now, so I can get to the 'gendarmerie' well before midday in case they close then.

From the Museum's website:

The selling of aircraft kits grew rapidly in the 1920s, and the “Lincoln Sport” promised to be one of the better ones. Assembled examples were also on offer. Unfortunately the Great Depression killed off this enterprise, and only plans were made available. They are still available, but as a home-built it was a challenge. Few “Lincoln Sports” remain.

Ours was flown, then it was stored outside for many years, before donation to the Museum. It was in poor condition and in addition to complete reconditioning of the wings a completely new fuselage had to be built. Restoration work was mainly conducted by Vern Turley

1930 MG M-type Boat Tail Speedster

Chassis No. 2M3347

Engine No. 3112B

Specs: 27 bhp, 847 cc single overhead cam four-cylinder engine, two-main bearings, three-speed gearbox, ladder frame and underslung axles, mechanical brakes, operated by Bowden cables. Wheelbase: 78"

History: The first diminutive MG M-Type Midget was based on the recently launched original Morris Minor. MG’s founder Cecil Kimber had rushed his 10-foot long, two seater to market to be unveiled at the 1928 Olympia Motor Show in London. The new boat-tailed Midget was designed to compete with the Austin Seven sports models and other similar small sporting cars.

Initially powered by a 20 bhp, 847 cc single overhead-cam four-cylinder engine, horsepower rose to 27 bhp at 4,500 rpm by 1930. Major design factors that made the M-Type a success in competition included the left-side, siamesed inlets with exhaust ports for two and three cylinders and the slightly inclined valves in the head operated by finger-type cam followers. Ultimately, this overhead cam engine would prove equally successful in racing for the later, more powerful C-Type, Magna and Magnette range.

MG had quickly established itself as a successful competitor, and with the lightweight M-Type Midgets, the marquee began regularly chalking up wins at hillclimbs, trials, rallies, and at Brooklands and other racing circuits across Europe. M-Type Midgets were commonly fitted with a sporty body, from the Carbodies coachwork firm, which consisted of an ash frame paneled in fabric-covered plywood. The tail also incorporated a hinged, pointed boattail for luggage and a spare tire. This rare and very drivable classic, of which only 27 examples remain in the U.S., represents the genesis of the MG marquee.

2M3347: With its flowing forest green fenders and subtly contrasting green vinyl body covering, this handsome MG remains a wonderful and unique driver. The boat tail sports an older restoration which has held through over the years. The charm of the driver quality aesthetics only add to the MG’s appeal. Interior upholstery and carpeting remain in good condition with zero wood rot on the flooring or anywhere else throughout the vehicle.

Mechanically the car is quite stable; if using the proper choking procedure, the boat tail will start up first crank. Tracking and steering is very similar to many vehicles of the period, and shifting is smooth and easy through all gears.

Weather on the road or at the show, this always fun-to-drive M-type is bound draws attention and compliments anywhere it goes!

· Rare and very desirable vintage British roadster!

· Handsomely preserved!

· A very enjoyable driver!

From the Paxtang Cemetery website:

Paxtang Cemetery first established in 1898, in what was then known as Swatara Township and adjoined the historic Paxton Church grounds. The sight was and still is ideal being elevated ground, rising high and rolling from its front. The soil is dry and particularly well suited for burial purposes. Nature has done much to make this one of her most charming spots. The landscape is beautiful and restful, & the outlook inspiring and magnificent. From any part of the cemetery a beautiful panorama view of the valley, mountains and woods unfolds itself to view. There are 34 acres, 12 of which are undeveloped. There have been over 10,000 internments in the cemetery over the last 100+ years and room for another 10,000 in ground burials.

The Paxtang Mausoleum is one of the cemeteries greatest treasures. The first phase was built in 1916 and the second in 1921. The entire mausoleum is made of granite and white marble. Inside you will find intricate stained glass windows in the walls and ceiling. Brass gates enhance the beauty of family crypts. There is currently five remaining crypts in this mausoleum. We hope to be adding more crypts and cremation niches inside this mausoleum in the near future. The mausoleum is also used today for chapel services during inclement weather.

William C. Grunden was the first caretaker. His grandson, Murvin Grunden III, still lives in Paxtang and is active in borough events.

The "receiving tomb" was used to hold bodies for up to 30 days so that families had time to return home for the funeral.

It was also used to hold bodies when the ground was heavy with snow and not easy to dig. When Harrisburg people died, the old Allison Hill Trolley brought caskets to the cemetery gates on Kelso Street. The caskets then were transferred to a horse-drawn caisson or hearse and taken to the grave.
