A place of personal devotion

In 1268, Lord John Balliol died. His grieving widow, Lady Dervorgilla of Galloway, had his heart embalmed and placed in an ivory casket. She carried it with her everywhere.

She undertook many charitable acts in his memory. These included the founding of the Cistercian abbey of Dulce Cor (Latin for ‘Sweet Heart’) in 1273. When she too died in 1289, she was laid to rest in front of the abbey church’s high altar, clutching her husband’s heart to her bosom.

Sweetheart Abbey’s conception as a shrine to human and divine love is deeply appealing. So too is its attractive setting. The graceful ruin nestles between the grey bulk of Criffel and the shimmering waters of the Solway Firth, whilst its blood-red sandstone walls contrast with the lush green grass at their feet.

A chequered history

Monks from Dundrennan Abbey., near Kirkcudbright, established the new monastery. It was the last Cistercian house to be founded in Scotland. Within seven years of Dervorgilla’s death, with the builders still working on the abbey church, the Wars of Independence with England erupted.

Edward I of England himself resided at the abbey in 1300, whilst campaigning in Galloway. After 50 years of bloodshed, the monastery was in a bad state. The bishop of Galloway bemoaned Sweetheart’s ‘outstanding and notorious poverty’. To the rescue rode Archibald ‘the Grim’, Lord of Galloway and 3rd Earl of Black Douglas, who financed wholesale repairs and rebuilding. Thereafter, little is heard of Sweetheart until its demise following the Protestant Reformation in 1560.

A graceful ruin

Despite the prolonged wars with England, and the vicissitudes of time, the beautiful abbey church of St Mary the Virgin survives almost entire, a lasting testament to the monastic ideal that was of such pivotal importance in the Middle Ages. (By contrast, the monks’ cloister to the south has almost entirely gone.)

The church was planned in the shape of a cross and divided into different areas:

•a presbytery at the east end once housing the high altar;

•the monks’ choir immediately to its west;

•flanking transepts to north and south, housing side-chapels;

•and a six-bay nave to the west.

A bell tower once soared high above the central crossing.

Although it adheres to Cistercian principles of austerity, the church has fine flourishes. These include the stone tracery in the presbytery windows, the ingenious circular window above the south transept, and the impressive west front. A stone effigy of Lady Dervorgilla lies on display in the south transept. She is shown dressed in gown and mantle and cradling her husband’s embalmed heart to her bosom.

Designed by Louis Blériot and Raymond Saulnier (of Morane-Saulnier), the Blériot XI was a light and sleek monoplane constructed of oak and poplar. The flying surfaces were covered with cloth. The original XI was designed and built in 1908 and made its public debut at a Paris airshow in December of that year. The aircraft's original configuration included a R.E.P. engine spinning a four blade metal paddle type propeller which proved to be unsatisfactory.

The plane gained immortality on July 25, 1909 when Louis Blériot successfully crossed the English Channel from Calais to Dover in 36.5 minutes and using an Anzani engine designed by the Italian engineer Alessandro Anzani. For several days bad weather grounded Blériot and his opponents Hubert Latham who flew an Antoinette monoplane and Count de Lambert who brought two Wright Biplanes. That morning, Blériot awoke, albeit in a bad mood, reportedly due to previously scorching his foot on an engine exhaust, to conditions fair enough to fly in. When Blériot took off, Latham's camp was still quiet; Latham had overslept. Fighting fog and bad weather, Blériot did not even have a compass to guide his crossing. It is said that the Anzani engine made the flight only with the aid of a brief rain shower to cool it off. Letting the aircraft guide itself, Blériot eventually saw the grey line of the English coast. Approaching closer and closer he spotted a French reporter waving the French flag marking the landing spot. Blériot made a very rough pancake landing during which the landing gear collapsed, but he walked away, winning the £1000 prize awarded by the Daily Mail.

This is a photograph from the 30th Annual AXA Raheny 5 Mile Road Race 2014 took place in Raheny Village, Dublin, Ireland on Sunday January 26th 2014 at 15:00. The 'Raheny 5' has become one of the most famous road races in Ireland. The race has continued to grow year-on-year and this year was no exception on the year of it's 30th Anniversary. Almost 3,000 participants took part in the various events of the day. The incredible voluntary organisational work carried out by Raheny Shamrocks and the local community in staging the race every year must be acknowledged.

The weather was postively wintery today. There was an icy wind blowing into the face of the runners at various points in the course. This made for some very variable mile-splits. Overall the weather was favourable in that the rain stayed away and there was some helpful 'wind at the back' for the runners in places.

The race route starts at All Saints Park and goes into Raheny Village via Watermill Road. The route then turns west and along the Howth Road before turning left onto Sybill Hill Road. The route then turns left again onto Mount Prospect Avenue and continues until you run down to the sea-front and the Clontarf Road. The only real hill in the course is at the left turn from Clontarf Road onto Watermill Road. Finally, at the North East end of St. Anne's Park the race turns left and makes it way to the finish which is positioned at the start area of the race.

We have an extensive set of photographs from today's race at the 1 mile and then 400 meters to go. The full set is available at www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157640185381674/

We use Creative Commons Licensing

We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?

The explaination is very simple.

Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own.

ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.

Creative Commons aims to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

Can I use these photographs directly from Flickr on my social media account(s)?

Yes - of course you can! Flickr provides several ways to share this and other photographs in this Flickr set. You can share to: email, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Tumblr, LiveJournal, and Wordpress and Blogger blog sites. Your mobile, tablet, or desktop device will also offer you several different options for sharing this photo page on your social media outlets.

We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. Our only "cost" is our request that if you are using these images: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, etc or (2) other websites, blogs, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you must provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us.

This also extends the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page. If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.

How can I get full resolution, print-quality, copies of these photographs?

If you just need these photographs for online usage then they can be used directly once you respect their Creative Commons license and provide a link back to our Flickr set if you use them. For offline usage and printing all of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available free, at no cost, at full image resolution.

Please email petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com with the links to the photographs you would like to obtain a full resolution copy of. We also ask race organisers, media, etc to ask for permission before use of our images for flyers, posters, etc. We reserve the right to refuse a request.

In summary please remember when requesting photographs from us - If you are using the photographs online all we ask is for you to provide a link back to our Flickr set or Flickr pages. You will find the link above clearly outlined in the description text which accompanies this photograph. Taking these photographs and preparing them for online posting does take a significant effort and time. We are not posting photographs to Flickr for commercial reasons. If you really like what we do please spread the link around your social media, send us an email, leave a comment beside the photographs, send us a Flickr email, etc. If you are using the photographs in newspapers or magazines we ask that you mention where the original photograph came from.

I would like to contribute something for your photograph(s)?

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers or in other circumstances we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

Mazzaella splendens, Iridescent (or rainbow) seaweed. This is the one that causes the "blue flash" you might see from the bluff top on a sunny day, looking down into the tide pools.

This one is at Moonstone beach in Cambria, just south of the surfers point-break. Quite a nice selection of these guys in the tidepools there.

Riverkeeper 4K | 4KM de la Sentinelle 2015

This weeks challenge was so exciting to me! I always look for inspiration the HA website and have so for years! Thankfully I made this card early int he week because I became very sick this week and didn't do much at all! I couldn't even find the energy to come and post my card! But I am finally feeling better!

This card is inspired by three different things on the HA website. First it's inspired by this card by no other than Jennifer McGuire:

www.heroarts.com/cardmaking/cardIdea.cfm?cardID=3338&...

Than it's also inspired by this article on pockets by Shari Carroll:

www.heroarts.com/learning/technique.cfm?techID=54&cat...

And lastly this card is inspired by this stamp craft by Lisa Spangler:

www.heroarts.com/stampcraft/stampcraft.cfm?craftID=100&am...

The butterfly is a bookmark on a paperclip! I saw the article about making the bookmarks and loved it because it calls for felt on the background, how unique and I have so much felt because I once went felt crazy than never used it! Than I thought it would be fun to make it in a shape of such a wonderful stamp Heartwinged Butterfly! So I was just going to make the paperclip but than had the idea to make it into a pocketcard after reading the article (well my verison the paperclip goes through a hole that is hidden by the Patterned Paper....) Than I found a card that inspired me. I like the Happy Happy Day sentiment because I can use this for anyone. It would make a perfect gift for somone when you want to give them something more than a card! I love that you can't tell and when the card is opened they can see! Check out more pictures!

Details of the card:

I versarmaked the words Happy on the blue using the word Happy from the Happy Graduation stamp from Cl336. And used the Happy Happy Day from an Archivers Set. And of course Heartwinged Butterfly!
