Or was that Vespers ? A scene of quiet duty as the TeddyMonks go off to prayer .
I know my cutting out skills need to improve but the fur of the teddies was far from easy to work with .
The scene is a shot I took of Winchester Cathedral back in 2011 , and the small tomb in the centre of the aisle behind one of the ted's heads is a modern replacement for a long gone tomb of St. Swithun . A brief outline of St. Swithun and his tomb taken from the Cathedrals own webpage ---
The life of St Swithun, an Anglo-Saxon bishop, is rich in legend. A century after his death in 863, he was chosen as patron saint for the Cathedral’s Benedictine monastery. His bones, housed in a splendid reliquary, became famed for their healing powers. His cult lasted until the Reformation, when all traces of his shrine were swept away.
Who was St Swithun?
The story of St Swithun, the Cathedral’s much-loved Saxon patron saint, combines a handful of hard facts with many legends.
The facts are that he was born in Winchester around 800, became counsellor to the Saxon kings Egbert and Ethelwulf, and was Bishop of Winchester for the last 10 years of his life.
When he died in 863, he was buried in front of the west door of the Saxon Old Minster – you see its outlines traced in brick next to the Norman Cathedral. Here he rested for over a hundred years.
How did he become famous?
When Aethelwold, the reforming Bishop of Winchester, set up a new community Benedictine monks at Old Minster around 964, he decided they needed a new, purpose-made patron saint.
Bishop Swithun’s bones were dug up and placed them in a precious reliquary inside the building, given by King Edgar – an act later seen as against the saint’s wishes.
In the 11th century, Swithun’s relics were on the move again – this time, into the huge new Cathedral built by the Norman invaders. His Anglo-Saxon reliquary was carried with great ceremony to its new position behind the high altar, where it stayed until 1450.
His tomb became a major site for pilgrims, many seeking to be healed from illness. A short tunnel (the Holy Hole) allowed them to crawl right under his shrine, as close as possible to his miraculous healing powers.
In 1476, a new, even larger shrine was inaugurated at the far end of the building. It must have been a striking sight, festooned with gifts of silver, gold and jewels offered by grateful pilgrims.
What legends are told about him?
One legend claims that Swithun tutored the young Alfred the Great. Another says is that he built the first stone bridge over the River Itchen that runs through Winchester.
His most famous miracle tells of a simple act of human kindness to a poor woman. When crossing the bridge, she was jostled and dropped her basket of eggs. The saint took pity on her – and made her broken eggs whole.
One source claims that when Swithun died, he asked to be buried out of doors ‘where the feet of ordinary men could pass over him.’
This, and a possible mistranslation of a medieval text, may have given rise to the story that when the saint’s bones were moved inside the Old Minster on his feast day, 15 July 971, a terrible storm broke out, lasting for 40 days and nights.
This is the basis of the popular belief that if it rains on 15 July, it will rain for 40 days. Sadly, this claim has no basis in fact.
What happened to his shrine?
The cult of St Swithun and his shrine came to an abrupt end during the Reformation, when King Henry VIII seized control of the Catholic Church in England, and declared himself head of the Church of England.
On 21 September 1538, under cover of darkness at 3am in the morning, the king’s commissioners smashed it apart, and stole all the valuables. Three years later, a workman stopped up the Holy Hole.
Nothing remains of his once great shrine today, but you can see a modern memorial that marks the spot.

A brutal hike - and this location felt incredibly remote. I got the capture I was looking for, so (as so often) the effort was worth it!

This tiny froglet has just undergone metamorphosis from a tadpole to a frog.
This species is classified as critically endangered by the IUCN, and it is always great to see evidence of the population reproducing and a future generation developing. These frogs are endemic to Cusuco National Park, and are not only threatened by habitat loss, but are also heavily effected by chytrid fungus.
The IUCN webpage for this species mentions a projected population decrease of 80% in the next 10 years due to chytridiomycosis - an almost unbelievable decline. Hopefully this species will bounce back, and conservation efforts will be sufficient to prevent these spectacular frogs from losing their fight for survival.
Location: Cusuco National Park, Sierra del Merendón, Honduras, Central America

Took this photo a while back while watching some late night T.V.
I´m posting this because I´ve been taking so many photos lately that it´s hard to decide which ones to post. I´m trying to be more selective, learn from my 'viewers' comments from my great & generous contacts, and create themes to work with.
Interesting fact -- This was my 10,000 photo with my Canon Powershot S410, now I´m on my way to 25,000 photos.
It still works but the zoom is starting to make some uncomfortable noises..

What is a Seamless Texture / Pattern?
A seamless texture is an special image, where one side of a image exactly matches the opposite side, so that the edges blend into each other when repeated. Seamless textures are used for desktop wallpaper, webpage backgrounds, video games, Photoshop fills and in 3D rendering programs.

I tried after this trip up the 2A to find some history on this hotel and town, but found very little. Tonight I found some great info on the Bowden.ca webpage using different search words.
This is the Bowden hotel...another Alberta rail town which has boomed over the recent years with it's close proximity to Red Deer. I'm guessing they have slightly lower taxes and houses cost slightly less than Red Deer itself?
The first homesteaders to the Bowden area arrived between 1875 and 1880. Prior to 1885,
settlers who had moved to the Bowden district were primarily ranchers. After 1885, the settlers
focused on mixed farming. Crops were produced such as hay, oats, wheat, and barley.
The earliest businesses included a general store, creamery, and a blacksmith shop.
In 1891, the Edmonton-Calgary branch of the Canadian Pacific Railway was completed to
Bowden. With the arrival of the railroad came a large influx of settlers who began planning
business establishments and secured property close to the railroad.
However, there were constant problems between the railway company
and the landowners.
The railway failed to reach an agreement with the landowners on the
purchase price of the properties. To end the dispute landowners decided to locate the new
townsite 1½ miles north of the existing site on land not owned by the railroad. This change in
location forced all of the early settlers to move to the new site.
Before WWII
In the early 1900s, the settlers' main source of income was from hay and
dairy products such as cream. By 1906, the local output of butter was the
second largest in the province. The first church in the district was of
Anglican faith and built in 1893. It was followed by the Presbyterian Church
built two miles west of the townsite.
In 1904, Bowden was incorporated as a village.
The first hotel was built and the following year a four-room brick schoolhouse was completed.
Over a period of years, fire plagued the growth of the village, destroying the business section in
1906, the general store in 1923, between 70 and 80 buildings in 1925 and the creamery in 1935.
Sadly, in 1954 a propane gas explosion destroyed the first building which had been built in the
village.
In 1959, construction began on a $4-million refinery by Canadian Oil
Companies Limited. With the completion of the plant, the economy of the
village and district had greatly improved, and a building boom occurred. In
1960, a natural gas processing plant was constructed, creating employment
for many people.
WWII and After
Bowden was in the centre of a prosperous mixed farming area. Farm income
was primarily from cattle and grain. The trend in that area then began to shift
towards more livestock, especially cattle. Farm mechanization in the
Bowden area was about average for the province except that the farmer's
progress was above average. With the opening and establishment of the
Canadian Oil Company's refinery and the sulphur extracting plant, 35
additional families moved into Bowden.
During the World War II an area of land 4 kilometres north of the Town was appropriated by the
Royal Canadian Air Force for construction of an Air Training Base. RCAF Station Bowden was
home to No. 32 Elementary Flying Train School (EFTS).
After the war the site was converted to the Bowden Institution, originally as a Prov

This series complements my award-winning guidebook, Chicago in Stone and Clay: A Guide to the Windy City's Architectural Geology. Henceforth I'll just call it CSC.
While this art installation isn't specifically covered in CSC, I thought I'd include it here anyway.
It's officially dubbed "Cloud Gate," but Chicagoans have nicknamed it "The Bean" (see my other photo of it in this album to see why). This 2004 sculpture by Anish Kapoor has a seamless stainless-steel exterior that attracts tourists and other park visitors like wasps to a picnic jampot. Note how the upper half of the reflected image of the Aon Center (formerly the Amoco/Standard Oil Building) has a roseate glow from the last rays of the setting Sun.
Stainless steel is, in its own way, as geologically derived a material as stone or fired clay. Its base element, iron, is nowadays mostly extracted from Precambrian Banded Iron Formation deposits containing magnetite and hematite. But unlike normal, corroding steel, the stainless variety is an alloy not of iron and carbon, but of iron and chromium extracted from the ore chromite. Nickel and molybdenum are sometimes also added.
For more on the Windy City's architectural geology, get and read Chicago in Stone and Clay, described at its Cornell University Press webpage.
The other photos and discussions in this series can be found in my "Chicago in Stone and Clay" Companion album. In addition, you'll find other relevant images and descriptions in my Architectural Geology: Chicago album.
Ullswater Garage's webpage is still online, but as Chris notes in the photo in the comments, it closed around 2018 and had been demolished by the 2022 Streetview goo.gl/maps/vudtHy5TdwDkSfCP7 (although leaving the house behind the garage).
In 1996 (see photo below), it was a small BP outlet with a unusually small pole sign, probably for planning permission reasons given the location (at the southern end of Ullswater). The sign proclaimed "Last Petrol Before M6" going north, which was probably true at the time if one followed the A592 towards Penrith, although in 2000 the heavily landscaped Rheged Services (also with a small pole sign, initially Total and later Esso) opened goo.gl/maps/6FZ55mQmiKBwCtVa8
Just visible in my blurry 1996 photo are the 1980s BP-style Unleaded and Diesel stickers on the pumps, in the "Alpha BP" font designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1968. I don't know whether the garage changed to National like many of the small sites BP supplied in the late 90s/early 2000s, but by 2009 (Streetview: goo.gl/maps/S7pJvLGtTBSEZsH77 ) as seen in my 2015 photos here, the garage was branded with the logo of Askham Oil Supplies, a local company, formerly Askham Motor Services and before that Lowther & District Agricultural and Motor Services, founded in 1959. I don't know how many petrol outlets they supplied (the brand is missing from Forecourt Trader's Catalist listings from this era) but they appear to have been a Texaco distributor.
Askham Oil Supplies (as the company became) was bought by Bayford & Co (Bayford Energy) in 2006, with the original owners buying back the agricultural equipment part of the business. And when Bayford's oil businesses were scooped up by GB Oils / DCC (later Certas Energy) in 2009, the Askham Oil Supplies name became part of the giant DCC empire.
Chris Barker has photos of another Askham Oil Supplies-branded site the other side of Penrith www.flickr.com/photos/131286969@N05/43199429621 & www.flickr.com/photos/131286969@N05/42481203564
