COAST SALISH TERRITORIES (Vancouver) – The Second Annual Vancouver Indigenous Media Arts Festival (VIMAF) will be showcasing the best of cutting-edge Indigitized artists and their works November 8-11 at a handful of venues on Coast Salish Territories. VIMAF brings together special guests from across Turtle Island, including Alanis Obomsawin, who will be presented with VIMAF’s Lifetime Achievement Award. She will be joined by directors and producers from Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg and BC. Their works will be shown at the West Coast’s only Native media arts festival, including a variety of mediums such as short films, music videos, documentaries, video art, animation, feature length films, interactive media, video projection, and broadcasting.
Programming at the weekend festival will celebrate a number of trailblazing artists from around Turtle Island with Gala and Conference events, interactive installations, National Film Board (NFB) feature film premieres, and evening musical programs, all meshing traditional and contemporary experiences of Indigenous Peoples. A number of prominent featured installations and films will be making their west coast debut at VIMAF, including NFB/imagineNATIVE partnership De Nort, an online interactive journey and onsite installation from the Winnipeg/Montreal ITWĒ Collective exploring life and experiences on a northern Manitoba reserve and how through forced reservation traditional memories and knowledge are being replaced.
“Presenting web-based work alongside radio, television, and cinema really show the multi-platform storytelling strategies being used to tell our stories,” said Ronnie Harris, member, VIMAF Coordinating Committee. “Using digital tools is a popular strategies for Indigenous storytellers on the West Coast.”
NFB Film premieres include Director Alanis Obomsawin’s The People of the Kattawapiskak River, returning Residential School lens We Were Children, West Coast Smokin’Fish, Every Emotion Costs, and others. VIMAF and W2 Community Media Arts Society resident media artist, Bracken Hanuse Corlett (Wuikinuxv-Klahoose), will also be projecting, Wuulhu – To Fuse Together, a series of digital installations throughout Festival home venue, W2, for the weekend. Musical offerings fuse traditional sounds with cutting edge electronic-influenced sets provided by the East Coasts’ A Tribe Called Red who are playing at Fortune Sound Club, and locals Skookum Sound System, as well as DJ’s Annashay, Vancouver DMC Finalist DJ Krisp playing VIMAF’s Indigenous Afterdark: Around The Sun.
The 2012 Festival will be headquartered at W2, with other events taking place at SFU Woodward’s Cinema, National Film Board – Pacific Region, and Fortune Sound Club. “Anchoring the Festival in Vancouver’s original settlement is fitting,” says Harris, “we are using the Woodward’s media hub which is made up of W2, SFU and the NFB, to bring a focal point for understanding what is Indigenous culture today in the centre of the city.”
VIMAF is a media arts organization founded in 2011 to re-affirm the presence of Indigenous digital production in Coast Salish Territory. VIMAF holds space for Indigenous media artists to show their works in an environment that fosters cultural discourse, critical awareness and interactivity through the independent production, stimulation, examination and illumination of Indigenous socio-political histories and current realities.
VIMAF gratefully acknowledges the support of W2 Community Media Arts Society, First People’s Cultural Council, Hastings Crossing BIA, National Film Board – Interactive Studio, and a dozen Indigenous organizations.

A wrecking yard (Australian, New Zealand, and Canadian English), scrapyard (Irish and British English) or junkyard (American English) is the location of a business in dismantling where wrecked or decommissioned vehicles are brought, their usable parts are sold for use in operating vehicles, while the unusable metal parts, known as scrap metal parts, are sold to metal-recycling companies.
Other terms include wreck yard, wrecker's yard, salvage yard, breakers yard, dismantler and scrapheap. In the United Kingdom, car salvage yards are known as car breakers, while motorcycle salvage yards are known as bike breakers. In Australia, they are often referred to as 'Wreckers'.
The most common type of wreck yards are automobile wreck yards, but junkyards for motorcycles, bicycles, small airplanes and boats exist too.
Many salvage yards operate on a local level—when an automobile is severely damaged, has malfunctioned beyond repair, or not worth the repair, the owner may sell it to a junkyard; in some cases—as when the car has become disabled in a place where derelict cars are not allowed to be left—the car owner will pay the wrecker to haul the car away.
Salvage yards also buy most of the wrecked, derelict and abandoned vehicles that are sold at auction from police impound storage lots, and often buy vehicles from insurance tow yards as well.
The salvage yard will usually tow the vehicle from the location of its purchase to the yard, but occasionally vehicles are driven in. At the salvage yard the automobiles are typically arranged in rows, often stacked on top of one another.
Some yards keep inventories in their offices, as to the usable parts in each car, as well as the car's location in the yard. Many yards have computerized inventory systems. About 75% of any given vehicle can be recycled and used for other goods.
In recent years it is becoming increasingly common to use satellite part finder services to contact multiple salvage yards from a single source.
In the 20th century these were call centres that charged a premium rate for calls and compiled a facsimile that was sent to various salvage yards so they could respond directly if the part was in stock. Many of these are now Web-based with requests for parts being e-mailed instantly.

‘You’re a Star!’ staff competition aimed at guest service excellence
KUALA LUMPUR, 10 February 2014 – International value hotel group Tune Hotels is sending the winner of its ‘You’re a Star!’ programme on a fully-paid trip to Scotland as a reward for her leadership qualities especially in achieving guest service excellence.
Manager of Tune Hotel LCCT-KLIA Airport Lalitha Namasemayam emerged champion of the staff competition and was crowned the ‘Tune Hotels Star 2013’. She received a return flight ticket to Edinburgh, Scotland and complimentary stay at Tune Hotel Haymarket in Edinburgh.
Tune Hotels Country Manager for Malaysia Kishore Suppiah said: “At Tune Hotels, service improvement is a continuous effort. Over five million guests have stayed at our network of hotels numbering over thirty across eight countries currently and they have regularly given us the thumbs up for a great stay experience with us resulting in the many accolades that we received.”
“Lalitha has shown great leadership and is a role model for her team mates and other colleagues. Human capital is our most valuable asset and by sharing positive stories and experiences among employees from various different locations, we seek to achieve a more positive and harmonious culture and work environment that makes Tune Hotels a great place to work in,” added Kishore.
With the objective of achieving guest service excellence, the internal competition was open to all Tune Hotels employees in Malaysia and Bali, Indonesia.
The ‘You’re a Star!’ programme was first rolled out in 2012. The 2013 edition was launched early last year and culminated with the final round held in Kuala Lumpur recently. The competition was implemented in various stages focusing on company values, personal grooming, creativity, on-the-job knowledge, communication and selling skills as well as overall competency.
The ultimate test came in the final round where the four finalist contestants were required to come up with a number of presentations involving public speaking, creative performance and a question-and-answer session. It concluded with a tactical question that tested their critical thinking skills and creativity.
Hang Al Nur Amin Hang Mohd Abid, Guest Services Supervisor at Tune Hotel Downtown Penang came in second and won a fully sponsored trip to Melbourne, Australia with complimentary stay at Tune Hotel Melbourne. The other two finalists are Khairil Hafez Yahya and Sathiya Mahathavan.
Commenting on her win, Lalitha hoped it would serve to inspire not only her team members but also other colleagues within the group.
The Manager of Tune Hotel LCCT-KLIA Airport said: “It has been a great privilege to be chosen as the Tune Hotels Star for 2013. Working with Tune Hotels has paved the way for me to meet people from all over the world. Every guest has a different story to tell and different thoughts to share and it’s been an enriching experience for me to meet them on a daily basis.”
Planning to embark on a “Go Green” project for the hotel, Lalitha said: “There are opportunities for recycling in every one of our property and I will work closely with my fellow hotel managers to ensure that we take active measures to reduce our carbon footprint.”
Tune Hotels has successfully pioneered the “pay-as-you-use” concept that has become hugely popular among smart travellers from across the world. Under the concept, guests only pay for room rates with the option of adding on other amenities like air-conditioning, towels and toiletries, in-room Wi-Fi and satellite TV service to keep costs down, reduce waste and save energy.
Tune Hotels provides international-class high-quality accommodation at central locations and focuses on key essentials but minus the generally underused facilities found in other hotels such as swimming pools, business centres and gymnasiums.

Still from the Fermi animated GIF of ultraviolet constellations. It makes sense that there would be invisible constellations based on the fact humans only see a very narrow band of "light" and not at all in the ultraviolet range (without a lot of surgical intervention).

Original caption: Long ago, sky watchers linked the brightest stars into patterns reflecting animals, heroes, monsters and even scientific instruments into what is now an official collection of 88 constellations. Now scientists with NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope have devised a set of modern constellations constructed from sources in the gamma-ray sky to celebrate the mission’s 10th year of operations.

The new constellations include a few characters from modern myths. Among them are the Little Prince, the time-warping TARDIS from “Doctor Who,” Godzilla and his heat ray, the antimatter-powered U.S.S. Enterprise from “Star Trek: The Original Series” and the Hulk, the product of a gamma-ray experiment gone awry.
“Developing these unofficial constellations was a fun way to highlight a decade of Fermi’s accomplishments,” said Julie McEnery, the Fermi project scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “One way or another, all of the gamma-ray constellations have a tie-in to Fermi science.”
Since July 2008, Fermi’s Large Area Telescope (LAT) has been scanning the entire sky each day, mapping and measuring sources of gamma rays, the highest-energy light in the universe. The emission may come from pulsars, nova outbursts, the debris of supernova explosions and giant gamma-ray bubbles located in our own galaxy, or supermassive black holes and gamma-ray bursts — the most powerful explosions in the cosmos — in others.
“By 2015, the number of different sources mapped by Fermi’s LAT had expanded to about 3,000 — 10 times the number known before the mission,” said Goddard’s Elizabeth Ferrara, who led the constellation project. “For the first time ever, the number of known gamma-ray sources was comparable to the number of bright stars, so we thought a new set of constellations was a great way to illustrate the point.”
The 21 gamma-ray constellations include famous landmarks — such as Sweden’s recovered warship, Vasa, the Washington Monument and Mount Fuji in Japan — in countries contributing to Fermi science. Others represent scientific ideas or tools, from Schrödinger’s Cat — both alive and dead, thanks to quantum physics — to Albert Einstein, Radio Telescope and Black Widow Spider, the namesake of a class of pulsars that evaporate their unfortunate companion stars.
Ferrara and Daniel Kocevski, an astrophysicist now at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, developed a web-based interactive to showcase the constellations, with artwork from Aurore Simonnet, an illustrator at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California, and a map of the whole gamma-ray sky from Fermi. Clicking on a constellation turns on its artwork and name, which includes a link to a page with more information. Other controls switch on the visible sky and selected traditional constellations.
“Fermi is still going strong, and we are now preparing a new all-sky LAT catalog,” said Jean Ballet, a Fermi team member at the French Atomic Energy Commission in Saclay. “This will add about 2,000 sources, many varying greatly in brightness, further enriching these constellations and enlivening the high-energy sky!”
NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope is an astrophysics and particle physics partnership, developed in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy and with important contributions from academic institutions and partners in France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Sweden and the United States.

I'm experimenting with how to display the team rankings I generate each week. Thus far, I've used Excel's built-in graphing tools to generate charts, but the results have been less than satisfying.
This version has been generated with Protovis, and I'm slightly happier with the results. Dealing with colors is easier in a web-based format rather than Excel's color picker, so I've made the series adhere to the team colors for this version. Being web-based, there are also options for interaction if I can push things that far.
