Coyote Wall Trails (Columbia River Gorge) - Little Maui Trail Reroute and Restoration - National Trails Day Work party. Funded by a grant from the National Forest Foundation
Photos from The Enchantments. Soaking up the fall season while the larches are in their prime time. The landscape changed as the sun rose higher. Started with golden misty morning views with a finale of an unreal blue lake. It was great to see so many people enjoying a day hike or backpacking further!

Sheet drains are being installed on both approaches to the bottom of this swale. The sheet drains are 12" high by 2" thick. Installed on the uphill side of the trail, they will intercept sub-surface flow and direct it to round 4" culverts that will pass beneath the trail

Meander Meadows along the PCT is one our favorite volunteer vacation destinations. Join us, and you could spend a week working in this amazing valley. Photo by Steve.
Trip from Seattle to Oregon, Hood for a quick and light accent. We were the firtst on the mountain that day. Started around 12-1 AM and hit the ridge right at the sunrise. Levi was a bit crazy and did it w/o ice axe..

In addition to hardening the lowest points in the trail and adding sub-grade drainage, we also re-aligned the trail to create strategic low-points to facilitate water movement into the drain system and off the trail
The re-alignment showing how we dip then climb out of a subtle swale to facilitate water movement off of the trail. This area seems to be dry enough that we won't need to install sheet drains, but we'll watch it for a season to see how it holds up. The sod and excess dirt will be used to re-hab the old trail.

Moving the trail slightly to the right in this photo creates a more substantial dip to which we can direct water via the sheet drains to new culverts. Notice that the existing trail on the left climbs, but the re-alignment descends slightly, then climbs again (past the volunteer in the white shirt)
