Known as the memorial to an unknown sailor. This image was taken in 2006 when all was quiet & peaceful there , in this lovely city. Now this image has very unpleasant overtones ,as this nation is fighting for its very existence.

I am not the author of this picture. This picture made a war correspondent covering the event on the front during the Russian aggression against Ukraine. This photo is placed on the stand, who talks about fighting in eastern Ukraine.

The war against Ukraine organized by the Russian leadership to seize its territories.

War-huh

What is it good for?

Absolutely nothing

Say it again

War-huh

What is it good for?

Absolutely nothing

Yeah

War-I despise

'Cos it means destruction

Of innocent lives

War means tears

To thousands of mothers how

When their sons go off to fight

And lose their lives...

Hmmm, they both make a sound point.

When there was a lull in the fighting on the front in the war between Finland and the Soviet Union, soldiers made this kind of wooden boxes.

Part 4 - (The Infected)

Arriving at Med-Bay DT-2, a team was on standby expecting our return. Heading the operation there, Doctor Ornius who served since the time of the Clone Wars. Accounting for everyone we got out of the hull, were able to pull back two survivors, one of them being Lanter who was taken down by one of those mutated. Brave soldier who led by example during this encounter. After being examined, no findings of marks or signs of infected cells n his bloodstream could be found. The other survivor, a handful of problems. At first glance, nothing was found, but after examiners found marks and entry points on his back, we slowly pulled back with weapons drawn. The soldier was frightened, but realized quickly what needed to be done. Without hesitation, he took his blaster and cried out “For the Empire” before shooting himself in the head. For some of us, it was a relief the problem was eliminated. Or so we thought.

series: war in europe

In solidarity with the people of Ukraine and for a world without war

Tell me its nicer dreaming, visions soft and sure

No way to find there's nothing left to me and him

Nothing more but a heart still at war...

Counting Crows

When the Very Large Telescope at Paranal Observatory (Chile) fires off its 4 x 22 Watts laser beams into the atmosphere, I can guarantee you that the "wow" effect is there! The star war begins!

These lasers launched by the UT4 "Yepun" telescope aim to create 4 artificial guide stars thanks to the Sodium layer of the atmosphere which absorbs this light and reemit it at ~90 km altitude ; creating 4 point-like sources that are used to probe the atmospheric discturbance in order to correct them in real-time. The Laser guide stars are part of the so-called Adaptive Optics (AO) system which corrects for these atmosphere defects, providing high resolution images that are limited by the theoretical resolution of the 8.2-meter mirror and not by the optical quality of the air anymore.

The Atacama desert provides one of the purest starry skies on Earth. The sky is so clear and dark that rare phenomena can actually be observed. For example, in this picture, we clearly see two separate sources of natural light (different from the orange laser beam): - The Zodiacal light: a white/blue tilted cone of light which comes from the diffusion of sunlight by dust particles located in space (within the inner orbital plane of the solar system). - The Airglow: an orange/red veil of light covering almost the whole sky. Airglow is a chemiluminescence process that results in the production of light after UV sunlight interacted with molecules/atoms of the upper layers of the atmosphere. The absorption of UV light by the atmosphere is only temporal and ends by remitting energy under the form of visible light.

This view was taken from Paranal Residencia located about 2 kilometers away from Cerro Paranal. At the bottom of the laser beam, there are the four telescopes forming one of the most powerful astronomical infrastructure of the world: the Very Large Telescope or VLT.

So many men were slaughtered in Civil War battles that their remains are still being found on battlefields over a century and a half later. Even when battlefields are not now recognizable as such. (I have mentioned previously that the house I grew up in sits atop what was a Union battery, and its bones, during the battle of Corinth. That's Mississippi, not Greece, though the latter saw its carnage as well. Almost exactly two millennia previously.)

Tourists at Gettysburg recently discovered a young soldier, after heavy rains had washed back the little bit of earth then covering his shallow grave. The remains were examined by the Smithsonian, and found to belong to a man about 5 foot 8 inches tall, in his early 20s, who had been shot in the back of the head.

These tragically, foolishly dead are with us, "the devil's own planting... a harvest of death", wrote a superintendent at one battlefield, and they sometimes make us aware.

The devil would have it so.

This exhibit is part of one of the museums I've visited in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam (War Remnants Museum). It depicts the condition of the prisoners of war during that time. Images of the atrocities of war are on diplay in that museum. Its a reminder to everyone that everybody loses in a war, nobody ever wins... Its a lesson that humanity always tend to forget.

in conversation with Queenette

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

If all men count with you, but none too much:

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,

Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,

And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

Leopard 24 flying under a double rainbow over the beautiful Philippine landscape.

On the other side of our aircraft in this photo was the monument erected in honor of the tens of thousands of Filipino and American prisoners that were forced to march the 100 miles across the northern island of Luzon from Bataan to their POW camp at Camp O’Donnell, on what has since come to be known as the Bataan Death March.

For this photo we were racing an incoming rain shower to LZ Fort Magsaysay to drop off some supplies for the guys down there training. I was trying to get some good photos of the memorial as we flew past, but it was already covered by rain, so I went back over to my side of the helo just in time to witness and capture this double rainbow.

War Memorial in Bowral. Some might find the sun glare annoying & understandably so, but I wanted to try to get the long shadow in the shot as well. Taken with a Hoya Infrared R72 filter.

Another rebel inspired by Rogue One. The red circular symbol is a reference to Ferris Wheel by Donovan, and the other red symbol is a Republic credits pouch. The thing around his neck is supposed to be a bandolier similar to Chewbacca's. Enjoy!
