70- 74 Wapping Wall, Wapping. 70 was designed by William Cubitt & Co and built 1862-3 No 72-74 was built John Whichcord junior and added in 1864-5. The top two floors and cornice were added to both buildings in 1900. No 75 to the right was designed by Holland and Hannen and completed 1898-1900.
This photo (from my archives) shows the ventilation shaft on the Limehouse side of the river, located in the King Edward VII Memorial Gardens. Until the second world war this had a staircase allowing pedestrians to access the tunnel.
Wapping is one of my favourite areas of London. Once a busy dock, when the docks closed much of the area became run-down. Today it is one of the richest parts of London, with the old wharfes now transformed into luxury flats, but unlike many areas of London, the transformation has taken place whilst retaining it's history. The old wharfes are now beautifully restored, and the narrow, winding cobbled streets give the area a lot of character.
