Datana interregima - This species feeds on hickories and walnuts, and we found two caterpillars on the ground under a stand of hickories.
Apart from doing photography, I build guitars. I'm currently doing some marquetery/veneer work for the head of a new one, and this produces lovely shavings !

In the garden behind our home we have two big walnut's trees. Last few years they did not have many nuts. So usually our squirrels were quicker than us in collecting them. But this year was such a uncommon harvest that there was enough nuts for all squirrels (one day I counted 8 of them on our trees) and still plenty left for us. I love the time, when in cold winter's evenings, the whole family seats at the fireplace and starts to crack nuts. Each of us has different technique: my son use hammer and has a big fun making lots of noise, my hubby takes two nuts and just cracks them in his palms and I do it my grandma's way: crowd in the tip of knife between two halfs and twist it. The shells open without cracking and you can get out 2 nice unbroken pieces of nuts (like on the images).Today I was cracking nuts for "walnuts in brown sugar & cardamon's caramel".
As I like to arrange fruits in very simple geometric shapes, I tried to arrange some walnuts in a circle, just one without shell ...
