The wafers are 10-25 mil (thousands of an inch) thick, one inch diameter single crystal silicon wafer with a 10-20 micron (millionth of a meter) thick layer of silicon oxide. The silicon oxide give the green and violet colors. The lower two are polished un-oxidized unprocessed wafer. The center is a test unit where the gold dots are diodes. The top wafer have a semiconductor pizo-resistor bridge diffused into the silicon with gold contacts for 1 mil aluminum wires to be attached. The middle two have a infused gold layer so they can be attached to a holder. It appears as though the gold has tarnished in some ways over the years. The finished product is a high temperature pressure measuring sensor.
These are from work I did back in the early 70's and have been laying around for years unnoticed. Getting the colors to show up required the angle shot and a lot of trial and error. The color changes at various angles as light is refracted through the silicon oxide (glass) layer.

Smell: wafer, milky. Nothing great. Milky, very sweet, greasy cream. Weird tasting wafer.
Louise thought these wafers looked like little books to start with, so she went with the whole boxful!
