This ever so thin delightful biscuit is a Stroopwafels...chocolate waffle filled caramel, cinnamon and bourbon vanilla. A delightful biscuit with tea or coffee, large enough to sit atop any cup and let the steam warm it for a tantalizing bite.

Water crackers, also known as water biscuits, and a Cheddar/bleu cheese spread. (Yes, the spread has that pronounced bleu cheese zing that some enjoy, others don't.)

The width of the stack as cropped is a smidgen under 3" (76.2mm).

Waves

And then goodbye

I live in a wafer thin dream

I, I can't cry

You know the time

Time's not kind

But I remember the way we were

The slow, slow sad love

I wonder do you miss my love

I know you can't

It's just a wave passing over me

What are these waves

They're coming over me

It must be my destiny

Waves

They're coming by

Goodbye, goodbye

Waves

They're coming by

Goodbye, goodbye.'

Photo: Group of people around a barquilleros stand near the Almudena Cathedral.

Description: A person who sells wafers on the street and carries with him a large red cylindrical can, called a barquillero, with a ruler on top is called a barquillero. They were very popular in Spain during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The wafer is a sweet originally from Spain.

The wafer began to be manufactured around the 9th century. At first it was sold at the doors of churches.

In the Middle Ages, wafers were widespread and were part of the diet of the nobility. They were also sold on the street.

Nowadays it is a sweet that is traditionally offered by barquilleros on the streets of Madrid.

Its Mum was a wafer so long.

"MAKE IT A GREAT DAY"

Today I've been taking the biscuit.

I must admit I felt a little queasy after taking this :))

Did you know that the wafers mentioned above were introduced back in 1945?

Thirty-three years later, the Czechoslovakians developed yet another iconic artefact: the Škoda 65E direct-current locomotives. Fast forward to today, and we arrive at a great gesture from the Czech- and Slovak railways towards train nerds: the locos nicknamed „banán" make their last mainline appearances on select lines, including the EC 241/240 pair connecting Prague with Košice.

With ETCS rolling out on nearly all railway corridors throughout Czechia from January, 2025, the few units still in service are being withdrawn. In case you're looking for an early Christmas present, ČD is offering locomotives 150.203 and 225 for sale by the way!

Pictured above is 151.006 sporting a special livery, rolling under the High Tatras near Štrba with EC 241.

And now for those few, who are still reading. As the lack of uploads shows, I'm not really hanging around on Flickr anymore, apart from occasionally throwing out faves to fellow colleagues. In fact, I'm considering terminating my Pro membership this year, as I'm not satisfied with the price/value ratio offered by the service. And even if that wasn't bothering me, I can't find any more free time to keep posting regularly here and writing these image descriptions (often turning into rants) next to running a bigger operation with my co-author friends.

The Ikarus-era is over, and the train-related stuff found a new home on a different platform, but maybe for the rest of the pics, I'll try to come up with a solution involving Flickr. We shall see. Happy new year to you all!

For the "Looking close... on Friday!" challenge "Tasty minimalism"

A friend sent me some new tastes from Japan last week. Their 'sweets' are quite delicate tastes, and less sweet or sugary than we are used to in the West!

This little (one-inch) snack is called Matcha Mochi Monaka. It is described here: "Inside the crispy monaka wafers, you'll find an elegant matcha and azuki paste, providing a balance between bitter and sweet".

Have a lovely, tasty weekend 😊

Wednesday 13th December, 2023.

Why the celebration? Well all the marks, after many hectic weeks, are finally locked and loaded at NESA, ready for the dawn release, by text message, to the thousands of Higher School Certifcate students across the state of New South Wales, and beyond. This is pressure. HSC marks and the all important ATAR rank, to determine university entry.

SO, best wishes to everyone. And a super special wish for my daughter, Miss 18, who will also receive her HSC marks by text at dawn tomorrow.

CN P68821 29 rolls over the small causeway bridging the two quarries in Rocky Lake with wafer logo, 3309 leading six business cars on October 30, 2024. The executive train is about to drop down to ocean level and will arrive in Rockingham where the train will be tied down and the various dignitaries will disembark. A tiny hint of rustic colour can still be seen clinging on for dear life.

These cookies (biscuits for some) were called sugar wafers on the package. I remember these from my younger days, but had not seen them for a very, very long time. I don't remember what the originals were called. These are a different brand (private label), and a little bigger than the originals, but were quite good.

Okay, I took this photo before I put my self-imposed ban on these types of pictures so I decided to post it. This is another recipe from that 1964 Culinary Arts Institute Encyclopedic - Vanilla Wafers. They don't look anything like the ones you can buy at the store but they tasted pretty good. I hope everyone has a great weekend!
