This cake is pretty ingenious. It doesn't condemn you for having retarded piping skills and yet somehow, it still manages to look somewhat gorgeous.

So there's this old guy that lives in the house pictured here just a few houses down from me. It's a sad looking old house: The paint is peeling, the grass is mostly dead, the windows and the door and the front walk are decrepit. I've only ever seen the man that lives here four or five times at Halloween when he gave me candy. I never see him leave. I never see things delivered. I don't know if he gets mail, even. His daughter comes by every once in a while to mow the lawn and help him, I think. I think thats her car in the driveway. I walk past the house every day on my way home. I look up at it. Look down the gravel and grass driveway at the doorless garage. I can see his empty back yard from my back yard. His house looks like it hasn't changed since it was built back in the twenties or thirties or whenever the houses on my block were built. I really don't know anything about this old man. It's kind of sad. I wish that I had a reason to just go and get to know him. Like something out of To Kill A Mockingbird. If he had a garden, I'd trash it. Just something to get in the door so that I could apologize, say something to him. Get to know him. I worry everyday when I pass his house that he's just laying there, cold and alone, breathing his last breath with no one there to mourn for him. I'd hate to have him pass out of this world without ever knowing who he was.
One day, I was walking up my street to a class I had when a car pulled over to me. I can't remember if they asked directions or not but the younger woman (30's, 40's) driving asked me who lived in the house. I just said an old man. She said something along the lines of "That house is dirtying up a pretty neighborhood". And I half frowned half smiled and said "He's just a lonely old man." The driver smirked, but her mother in the passengers seat closest to me smiled at me. As if she knew what I meant.
It's true that his house looks nothing like the clean kept houses on my stretch of the street, and yes, if I didn't know better, I'd think it was an abandoned house. But there's something charming about the house that draws me to it. I'll always remember that old man living in his old house. Giving me Necco Wafers for Halloween.
I know that I will return home some day to see it freshly painted, with green grass out front, and kids playing in the back yard. Maybe a flower garden along the foundation. It will look like a home fit for a family. But all the same, it will lose all of its charm.
Modified from a Dorie Greenspan recipe, this dessert is nothing more than wafer-thin slices of Asian pears layered with coconut oil and a spiced sugar mixture, lightly pressed and slowly baked to meltingly tender perfection. A chilled square of this alongside caramel or vanilla ice cream is the perfect, frugal-fancy end to any day of the week!

The rotating wafer support maintains flatness and position of 4", 6", 8", 10", 12", and 13.625" diameter wafers in order to achieve contamination-free contact angle readings while preserving flatness. Each wafer support is hand lapped to a high-tolerance. The support incorporates a rotating stage plate which is graduated in 1° increments with displacement holes for creating the appropriate suction. The wafer support mounts directly to the leveling stage of the Contact Angle Goniometer. Model 400 supports and includes an 8" wafer support (and other sizes can be added). Models 190, 200, 250, and 290 support the 4" wafer support only. Larger supports may require an upgrade kit which will extend the focal length of the camera and extend the microsyringe fixture. We offer kits which include all of the necessary parts.

Crisp, light coconut egg wafers rolled around some rather tasteless pork floss. Tastes better if I poke the pork floss out with a single chopstick and eat it separately :)

Wafer chocolates were my personal favorites.
Pile of some wafer-chocolates on a hand cart, being sold in some super-populated, super-polluted & super-busy market.
Chocolates, anyone??

This was a point in our service (post dessert) when service had gone from bad to completely FALLING APART and OUTRIGHT NEGLECTFUL. These beauties were dropped off at the table without any mention as wo what they were - unless I missed it....
The Tunnock's Caramel Wafer, correctly known as the Tunnock's Milk Chocolate Coated Caramel Wafer Biscuit, is a bar consisting of five layers of wafer, separated by four layers of caramel. The bar is coated in chocolate, made from cocoa and milk solids. The wafers are wrapped in red and gold coloured foil. Dark chocolate wafers, wrapped blue and gold, are also available.

It's one week later and oh how the mighty have fallen. Where once a proud man hurled good money into vending machines to sate his desires, now a miserable wretch scrabbles in the gutter for pennies.
The lavish chocolate, coating caramel and biscuit is replaced by a spray-coated wafer finished with a micron of brown paste. Is it chocolate? Who knows? It may be chocolate, it may not. It has the power to satisfy, but only slightly.
