the loading site for wood and wood chips in Arvika is west of the town centre. Hector Rail 841.001(ex-SJ T43) with a train consisting of Innofreight high volume wagons/containers during loading of wood chips. The cargo is bound for the bio fuel energy plant in Värtan.
Dunlins (Calidris alpina) in Fujimae Tidal Flat, Nagoya, Japan. Fujimae Tidal Flat is a symbol of environmental protection in Nagoya.
This site was planned to be filled in for waste disposal. But after strong opposition, the waste was separated and reduced in volume. The landfill was cancelled, and Fujimae Tidal Flat was saved.

I needed to warm up for the night shot. To get into the comfort zone for me a natural start was to go for Black & White pictures. This trip's theme was long exposures with water. The hydro-station at Boen would be a good starting point. You can really feel the change in air pressure as you climb along the massive waterfall. You're really met with a huge roaring volume of water.

While the migratory birds are departing for warmer places and the mammals grow their winter coats, the northern prairie undergoes a rapid and dramatic transformation. The green hills have turned brown and orange; red fruits appear on the buffaloberry bushes. Days are shorter, nights cooler. Change is in the air...
In October my friend George, the film maker, came down from Swift Current for a screening of his documentary, Wild Prairie Man, at the Palais Royale Theatre in Val Marie. The next morning he came by my house in the pitch dark and we headed out to Grasslands, watching as the southeastern sky began to glow and brighten, and then looking for a good spot to get out as the first direct rays began to sweep the prairie.
We stopped somewhere between the former Dixon and Walker ranches, now part of the national park. Here the broad plateau was broken by gullies that drain snowmelt each spring into the Frenchman River, seen here as a dark band of shadow near the top of the frame, but not far away, lined with small trees and shrubs. I used a wide angle lens to emphasize the foreground - in fact this shot is 75% foreground, and the distances look greater than they really are.
Nevertheless, it's a large valley; behind me, the hills rose up just as they do on the far side. I often imagine this place in early post-glacial times, when much of this valley would have been filled with water: the Frenchman rolling southward into the Missouri drainage, as it does today with far less volume. What a privilege to be here, now, in a place filled with wildlife, on the relatively untouched prairie, with only the breeze making small sounds through dry grasses, and sometimes carrying distant coyote voices. But my fingers were numb with the cold. Soon I'd be breaking out the winter parka, boots, gloves, mitts, and wool hat.

A quietness akin to a heavy fog hovers over an old barn that once ricocheted the sounds of a farmer's family doing chores and the insistent appeals of the livestock hoping for their evening meals. Now the major sounds are limited to the cooing of pigeons on the roof and the occasional flashing noise of a car passing by on a country gravel road.
The genus name Delphinium derives from the Ancient Greek word δελφίνιον (delphínion) which means "dolphin", a name used in De Materia Medica for some kind of larkspur.
[Pedanius Dioscorides said the plant got its name because of its dolphin-shaped flowers.

I bought a four volume collection of Oriental Art at a flea market for a dollar. This illustration is captioned “Poem scroll decorated with painting of cranes". Painting by Tawaraya Sotatsu; painting by Hannami Koetsu. ink, gold and silver on paper, Early 17th c.
Scanning the two halves proved difficult as it's printed across the full adjoining pages, I had to lay the book on the porch and photograph it in RAW and remove the crease, the ‘divide’ of the print with Photoshop. I loved the graphic elements of the painting and all the movement displayed by the birds.

La singularité du bâtiment de Jacques Ferrier se fonde sur le lien que le nouveau siège communautaire crée avec le paysage de Rouen. Son profil contraste avec l’omniprésence des plans horizontaux qui caractérise ce site portuaire, et sa silhouette fait écho aux bâtiments industriels rénovés de la rive droite. Les obliques du volume répondent aux silhouettes des grues et des objets portuaires, aux étraves des navires qui passent. Le bâtiment révèle et se sert de la puissance du site pour intensifier la vie urbaine sur la rive gauche. En prolongement du futur parc, le bâtiment est à son tour créateur de contexte pour le futur écoquartier dont il sera la proue.
Son architecture facettée et transparente est conçue pour jouer des variations de lumière du ciel normand, des reflets de l’eau et des couleurs du climat. Le bâtiment est revêtu d’une façade d’écailles de verre colorées. Irisant et diffractant la lumière solaire, elles parent le bâtiment de touches de couleur qui se démultiplient avec les reflets du fleuve. Ce registre poétique est inspiré de l’impressionnisme et de Claude Monet. Le verre est revêtu d’une couche d’oxydes métalliques qui, de l’extérieur crée un reflet iridescent coloré, et s’efface vu de l’intérieur, n’altérant pas la vision des espaces de travail.

The singularity of Jacques Ferrier’s building is based on the link that the new community headquarters creates with the landscape of Rouen. Its profile contrasts with the omnipresence of horizontal planes that characterize this port site, and its silhouette echoes the renovated industrial buildings on the right bank. The oblique lines of the volume respond to the silhouettes of cranes and port objects, and to the bows of passing ships. The building reveals and uses the power of the site to intensify urban life on the left bank. As an extension of the future park, the building is in turn a creator of context for the future eco-district of which it will be the prow.
Its faceted and transparent architecture is designed to play on the variations in light of the Normandy sky, the reflections of the water and the colors of the climate. The building is clad in a façade of colored glass scales. Iridescent and diffracting sunlight, they adorn the building with touches of color that multiply with the reflections of the river. This poetic register is inspired by impressionism and Claude Monet. The glass is coated with a layer of metallic oxides which, from the outside creates a colored iridescent reflection, and fades when seen from the inside, not altering the vision of the work spaces.

Période de nourrissage chez le busard cendré.
J'ai passé beaucoup de temps à l'affût pour photographier ce busard en vol. En période de nourrissage, il peut rester de longs moments près des petits puis repartir en chasse. L'approche est très rapide, le busard cendré se pose vite dans les blés, ne restant que de trop brèves secondes devant l'objectif.

Period of feeding in the montagu's harrier.
I spent a lot of time on the lookout for to photograph the harrier in volume In the period of feeding, it can remain for long periods of time close to small then go hunting. The approach is very fast, the harrier arose quickly in the wheat, being that all too brief seconds in front of the lens.

Zeitraum fütterung bei der wiesenweihe.
Ich verbrachte viel zeit auf der lauer, um zu fotografieren, was bussard in vol zeit füttern, so kann es bleiben längere zeit in der nähe der kleinen und dann wieder auf der jagd. Der ansatz ist sehr schnell, wiesenweihen, stellt sich schnell in die saat, die verbleibende, dass zu kurze sekunden vor dem ziel.

Me pasé un montón de tiempo en el puesto de observación para fotografiar el aguilucho en volumen En el periodo de lactancia, puede permanecer por largos períodos de tiempo cerca de la pequeña, a continuación, ir de caza. Periode van voeding in de grauwe kiekendief.
Ik besteed veel tijd op de uitkijk voor om de foto van de kiekendief in het volume in de periode van het voeden, het kan blijven voor langere tijd dicht bij kleine dan gaan jagen. De aanpak is zeer snel, de kiekendief ontstond al snel in de tarwe, wordt dat maar al te korte seconden in de voorkant van de lens.

Periodo di alimentazione in albanella minore.
Ho speso un sacco di tempo alla ricerca di fotografare l'harrier in volume nel periodo di allattamento, può rimanere per lunghi periodi di tempo vicino ai piccoli e poi andare a caccia. L'approccio è molto veloce, il biancone si alzò in fretta nel grano, che, troppo breve secondi davanti all'obiettivo.

Período de alimentação no tartanhão-caçador.
Eu passei um monte de tempo à procura de fotografar o harrier, em volume, No período de alimentação, que pode permanecer por longos períodos de tempo perto de pequenos, em seguida, ir à caça. A abordagem é muito rápida, o harrier, levantou-se rapidamente no trigo, sendo que todos os demais breves segundos na frente da lente.

Pretty excited about this volume, not only because it's beautiful & always exciting to receive in the mail, but because I got a chance to contribute. I, with the help of Eric, (who is honestly much better with words) wrote an essay about taking the time to slow down and enjoy brewing coffee in the morning. The essay is featured next to photos by the talented Chantelle Grady, who photographed a Kyoto drip coffee maker & a page with different old time brewing methods.
There's a few more shots on the blog as well, along with pictures of our homemade s'mores that turned out far better than I thought- I'll just say that graham cracker dough is stickier than I expected!
