Vishnu and Garuda.
The tale of Garuda and Vishnu is a well-known story from Hindu mythology. It involves two important characters: Garuda, a divine bird, and Lord Vishnu, one of the principal deities in Hinduism. This tale showcases the bond between devotion, duty, and the concept of dharma (righteousness).
Garuda's unwavering dedication to his mother and his determination to fulfill his duty to save her from slavery showcase his virtuous character. During his quest, Garuda encountered Lord Vishnu. Impressed by Garuda's devotion and determination, Vishnu granted him a boon. Garuda was asked to be the mount of Vishnu, carrying him on his back. Vishnu also blessed Garuda with immense strength and immortality.
In Vaishnavism, a major Hindu tradition that worships Vishnu as the supreme divine being, followers believe that Garuda possesses "infinite physical power" and can bear the weight of the entire universe on a single feather. Garuda is said to be able to manipulate fire and to cause heaven, earth, and hell to stop spinning by flapping his massive wings.
Apatheia (Greek: ἀπάθεια) in Stoic philosophy refers to a state of mind where one is free from emotional disturbance. This might be translated as equanimity or indifference. This is the root of the word apathy. Apatheia must, however, not be confused with apathy. Apatheia is a positive term; apathy, a purely negative one. Whereas Aristotle had claimed that virtue was to be found in the golden mean between excess and deficiency of emotion (metriopatheia), the Stoics sought freedom from all passions (apatheia). It meant eradicating the emotional response to external events - the things we cannot control. For the Stoics, it was the optimum rational response to the world, for we cannot control things that are caused by the will of others or by Nature, we can only control our own will. This did not mean a loss of all feeling, or total disengagement from the world. The Stoic who performs correct (virtuous) judgments and actions as part of the world-order experiences contentment (eudaimonia) and good feelings (eupatheia). The Pyrrhonian skeptics also sought the eradication of feelings when disturbance depends on belief, but allowed for only a moderation of feeling when based on sensations such as pain. The term was later adopted by Plotinus in his development of Neoplatonism, for whom apatheia was the soul's freedom from emotion achieved when it reaches its purified state. (from Wiki).

In this ancient city there is much to experience: from ultimate relaxation to cave adventures. Valkenburg is called a town, but it is not really very large. Not even by Dutch standards. I actually enjoy it. You can do everything by foot, without getting too tired. In the cosy centre you can enjoy walking through the traffic free streets enlivened by the many terraces. When you look up, above the awnings, the traces of past centuries are still clearly reflected in the graceful buildings. Under the medieval city gate you can imagine how the damsels used to walk around in years past, peeking at brave ‘knights in shining Armor’. The town looks like the movie set of a fairy tale movie.

The drawers of a whole year are closed, thoughts, projects, hopes, dreams, stacked in bulk in the midst of joyful junk, fragrant notes of beautiful things to remember, ideas left in the bottom a bit crumpled.
I think about how many things I have put in the drawers this year, how many I have forgotten, how many I have caressed, how many more I have wanted to put in but I have not wanted, or simply could. Yet there comes a time when the drawers explode, by dint of cramming things inside.
I learned some important things this year.
It was an intense and very rich year, with new projects, new people, some really "special" who made me understand the importance of some things that I would never have thought of.
I understood that true wealth is not just taking, receiving and receiving, because taking fills the hands, but giving fills the heart.
What I learned this year is that giving is much more important than taking, because it is in giving that a virtuous circle is created by which people are able to become better.
Yet smiles do not cost anything, a kind gesture does not weigh, answering a question posed with grace is something beautiful and also exciting, because it allows you to share with someone the things you are passionate about and maybe be able to get in him a sparkle with passion.
What I want to wish you all for this new year is an infinity of drawers to be filled in and emptied continuously, small chests without doors where the world can stop just a little, so that it can satisfy us, but then it slips away, more beautiful, because imbued with us, towards others, towards the world, so that the knowledge, the passion, the joy of doing the things we love, spread like fragrant pollen capable of making other minds like ours fertile.

Me viene a la cabeza los buenos y malos momentos, los nostálgicos, los tristes y cumplir los objetivos que no pude cumplir en el pasado. No se lo que me aguarda, pero lo que sí sé y no dudo es que ya no soy el mismo, que he cambiado, creo que a todos nos pasa lo mismo, pero lo que realmente importa es darte cuenta que ya no soy quien era, que he aprendido de todo lo que me ha pasado este año y en los de antes, que los absurdos propósitos y todas esas pantomimas dan igual, que lo que realmente importa está en ti mismo y que lo que eras antes no es más que un recuerdo del pasado del cual no existe foto para etiquetar o colgar.
A pesar de todo tengo que admitir que sí, he escuchado historias increíbles, he visto cosas que no hubiera querido ver, he perdido gente y he encontrado otra, he destapado mentiras y he descubierto verdades, algunas personas me han hecho daño y no se sí yo se lo he hecho a otras, pero al fin y al cabo eso no hace más especial este año, si no el hecho de despedirme de la persona que está escribiendo esto, porque al igual que todos vosotros ya he cambiado a lo largo de escribir este texto. Una vez más pasa la hoja de un calendario y da la casualidad que esta vez, te ves a ti mismo, veo los acontecimientos que desfilan y pienso que son como simples satélites que giran al rededor de un centro, veo el verdadero y único poder que residirá siempre justo en la mente, porque el hecho de que las experiencias personales dejen una huella en la estructura cerebral nos demuestra que no hay nada que cambie de una manera determinada para siempre, y esto nos revela que estamos programados, pero para ser únicos, totalmente distintos de los demás.

This is why respect and prayers for one's ancestors is so vital in the practice of this religion. Taoism, like all the perennial religions, is essentially Traditionalist in its outlook.
Taoism has been connected to the philosopher Lao Tzu, who around 500 BCE wrote the main sacred text of Taoism, the Tao Te Ching.

For me, being feminine includes understanding, gentleness, showing affection, and behaving with proper manners and etiquette. I also believe that this should include, sensitivity, kindness, warmth, flexibility, cooperation, expressiveness, modesty, humility, empathy, caring, tenderness, helping others, a dedication to people, and causes that are virtuous.
I express my femininity with my body, appearance, and behavior, as they are all linked. It is an essential part of the human experience, as it offers security, confidence and a positive attitude to society. Humility is an important aspect of femininity, like the ability to laugh at oneself, and not be too proud, and break out of useless patterns and habits. Being feminine also has a natural flow, influencing others with ones creativity, flexibility, and compassion, that can be expressed in attitude, behavior, clothing, words, appearance, gestures, and actions. Remember, it is important to love oneself in order to fully love others.
Our femininity can express our dreams and ideologies and attract others to reflect on these, like the moon attracts the tides. We too should set goals to behave the way we want the world to be. This all being said, at its root, femininity is not something that can be taught in a classroom, but rather an innate and part of what makes us feminine.

For ESLs, "playing hooky" is skipping (not attending) a day of school. Unfortunately (in retrospect) I never did. Back then, I was too much of a "goody two-shoes."

The Hall of Sudhana (Hall of Shan Cai) is a multifunctional hall named after a giant relief sculpture. The lifelike figures depicted in this huge sculpture number fifty-three in total. There is also a fascinating story behind it.
The Pilgrimage in Pursuit of Enlightenment Guided by 53 Mentors depict the entire process of a practitioner attaining Buddhahood. The practitioner in this story is none other than the attendant of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, Sudhana Boy.
According to the Avatamsaka Sutra, Sudhana Boy made extensive offerings to past Buddhas, cultivating profound virtues and always rejoicing in purity. He accumulated immense merit and blessings. Sudhana Boy was born in the city of Awakening in India, and at the time of his birth, seven great treasures naturally appeared in his household. Additionally, at the moment of his birth, five hundred precious vessels materialized, leading his parents to name him "Sudhana."
As Sudhana grew up, he was influenced by the teachings and inspiration of Manjushri Bodhisattva. Sudhana embarked on a challenging journey to seek the Dharma. He tirelessly traveled southward, visiting various virtuous individuals. His visits included Bodhisattvas, monks, nuns, Upasakas, Upasikas, etc., totaling fifty-three virtuous individuals. This is the famous "Pilgrimage in Pursuit of Enlightenment Guided by 53 Mentors".
Sudhana's journey of visits and study exemplifies the path to Buddhahood. It teaches us the importance of perseverance and an open-minded approach to learning Buddhism in a humble way.
The Pilgrimage in Pursuit of Enlightenment Guided by 53 Mentors is a representative work of Mahayana Buddhism. Like every practitioner, Sudhana's heart was childlike. During his spiritual journey, he approached, observed, contemplated, and made choices in relation to each accomplished individual. He chose to learn from their virtues and kept his distance from their flaws.
Among his 53 mentors, the twenty-seventh was Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, who cared deeply for him. After acquiring the Dharma, Sudhana returned to the side of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva and assisted in the Bodhisattva's compassionate mission to guide sentient beings.
This is the story of the Hall of Sudhana and the Pilgrimage in Pursuit of Enlightenment Guided by 53 Mentors at Wutai Shan Buddhist Garden.
善財寶殿是一個多功能廳，它因為一幅巨幅浮雕而得名。整個五十三參浮雕作品長26.2公尺（合86英尺），高6.4公尺 （合21英尺），供奉於五台山大殿一樓多功能廳，是一幅巨型雕工精美的藝術大作。這幅巨雕上面的人物栩栩如生，一共有53位。其中53個人物的立體雕像都是獨立的立像，每個人物雕像約1.08公尺。這裡面還有一個非常有趣的故事。
五十三參講述了一位修行者成佛的整個參學過程。這位修行者就是觀音菩薩的左脅侍－善財童子。
觀音菩薩有兩位侍者：一位是善財童子，一位是龍女。善財童子是《華嚴經入法界品》裡的主要人物。據《華嚴經》記載，善財童子在過去諸佛處，廣修供養。深種善根而常樂清淨，並且喜歡親近善知識，修習菩薩行，因而積聚了大量的福德因緣。善財童子生於印度覺城，因前生福報，初住母胎之時，家中自然顯現七大寶藏。出生之時，又有五百寶器出現，父母請人為他取名叫「善財」。
善財長大時，文殊菩薩正在覺城弘法。由於受到文殊菩薩的教導與啟發，善財歷盡艱辛，南下求法，歷訪各處的善知識。所參訪的對象，有菩薩、比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷、童子、童女、天女、婆羅門、國王、王妃、仙人、醫師等，共計有五十三位善知識。這就是著名的「五十三參」。
善財童子的參訪修學之路為佛教徒展示了一條通往成佛的途徑，由淺入深，由低到高，循序漸進，不可投機取巧。它啟示人們在學佛的歷程裡，要有吃苦耐勞的毅力和鑼而不捨的精神。虛心學習佛法，所學的對像不必固定為一師一處，甚至只要他有長處，即使是外道，也不妨虛心向他求教。這是一種開放、寬廣的求學胸懷，值得後人效法。因此，善財童子是學習佛法、實踐佛法的榜樣。
善財童子五十三參是大乘佛教的代表之作。善財童子就像每一個修行的人，他的內心猶如孩童，在自己修行的旅程上，向每一位成就者都親近、觀察、思維、抉擇，擇其善者而從，於其不善者遠離。
其中參拜第二十七位名師是觀音菩薩，觀音菩薩對他十分關心。善財得到佛法後，便回到觀音菩薩身邊，協助觀音菩薩教化眾生。
這就是五台山善財寶殿和五十三參的故事。

It is said that, in a very remote time, in the fortress of Duino lived an evil knight who despised his wife for being too gentle and virtuous.
One evening, he pulled her near a rock and pushed her into the sea.
Shocked, the lady turned her eyes to heaven, asking for help.
Just a stifled cry came from her mouth; she had been petrified.
From that day, during the witching hour, the White Lady begins to wander from room to room, until she finds the cradle in which her son used to sleep.
There, the White Lady remains in profound silence until dawn, when she returns to her rock, and the pain turns her again in stone.

The soul’s only security is in change. As Gregory says in the Vita (407 CD), this is one of the great paradoxes of faith, that faithfulness in virtue is the principle of change; while, without change, there is no stability in perfection. To stop growing and changing is to fall away from stability...
...Natural humanity is in need of grace and of liberation; that is the whole burden of the Vita. When set free, human nature has overwhelming possibilities precisely because it is now taking on the shape sketched by Christ. Gregory continues to write of apatheia as a spiritual goal. However, he seldom seems to mean by this the total eradication of passion, and is prepared to allow a significant place to desire as a fundamental moving impulse (there is a lengthy and complex discussion of this in his dialogue de anima et resurrection): passion is not in itself sin, and the virtuous person will not try to destroy passion but will seek to control and direct it properly (de beat, II. 1216A–1217D, VI. 1271D–end), finding what its good uses may be. The ‘passionate’ in human nature, then, is not outside the scope of salvation; the human ideal is not the extirpation of ‘inferior’ faculties, but a controlled and integrated use of all that is human.

The tale of Garuda and Vishnu is a well-known story from Hindu mythology. It involves two important characters: Garuda, a divine bird, and Lord Vishnu, one of the principal deities in Hinduism. This tale showcases the bond between devotion, duty, and the concept of dharma (righteousness).
Garuda's unwavering dedication to his mother and his determination to fulfill his duty to save her from slavery showcase his virtuous character. During his quest, Garuda encountered Lord Vishnu. Impressed by Garuda's devotion and determination, Vishnu granted him a boon. Garuda was asked to be the mount of Vishnu, carrying him on his back. Vishnu also blessed Garuda with immense strength and immortality. Lord Vishnu's blessings emphasize the significance of devotion to the divine, as well as the interplay between mortals and deities in Hindu mythology.
