Vík í Mýrdal, Southern Region, Iceland
Iceland’s sparsely populated southern coast is full of natural wonders, including mountains, glaciers and volcanoes. Amidst these harsh environs is the small village of Vik, where the austere but beautiful church, Reyniskirkja, overlooks the 300 residents from a raised position – deliberately protected from lava flows and melt-water. Here, the red roof is juxtaposed with the lush green of the surrounding mountainsides, with inclement weather coming in from the wild Atlantic.

The church of Vik (Iceland) at night.
This is a composite photo made with seven shots. I used 6 shots with different exposure to take the church at night and to obtain an adequate exposure of the hardly illuminated building and the soil in the foreground and then I used a seventh shot taken two days before in another area of Iceland to add the northern lights.
I do not use to publish this kind of composite shots but in this case the result, in my opinion, is worth to be published. I hope you like it.
Reynisfjara is widely considered one of the most beautiful beaches on earth (see for example Islands Magazine). This black pebble beach boasts an amazing cliff of regular basalt columns called Gardar, which resembles a rocky step pyramid and out in the sea are the spectaculary shaped basalt sea stacks Reynisdrangar. The area has rich birdlife, including puffins, fulmars and guillemots.
Vik and its church and the sea stacks in the background. During the pandemic, the Icelandic series "Katla" was filmed here - no tourists and therefore ideal for such a project!

Stormy clouds over Vik beach. They did brink some snow, but it was time for an early lunch anyway. Not long after that I got stuck in snow, so not the perfect start to Lofoten adventure!
I visited Iceland in September 2012 with the intention of making some long exposure images. I think my post processing skills have gradually improved since then so I visited the archives and found this unprocessed file.
Vík, the southernmost village in Iceland, lies directly beneath the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which lies on top of Katla volcano. Katla has not erupted since 1918. Its present dormancy, one of the longest in its history, has led to speculation that an eruption may occur soon. An eruption could melt enough ice to trigger an enormous flash flood, some say large enough to obliterate the entire town. The town's church, located high on a hill, is believed to be the only building that would survive such a flood. Here's hoping the worst doesn't happen!
The cliffs of VIk are definitely an impressive feature to photograph, especially during the golden hour as it adds quite a lot to the texture.
I remember it was windy that day so we had to pretty much hide behind the cliff which is awesome because you get to sit there and admire the rock formations and well don't get sand in your face.
A fact about Vik is that it is considered to be the wettest place in Iceland.

I never get bored with this beach, although the weather is usually so extreme that I never stay long. This is a long exposure taken on Vik beach, along Iceland's Southern Coast.

We left home as the Coronavirus madness was about to overtake the world and came here to Vik. And settled in Smidjanbrugghus it was hard to imagine our society was hellbent on getting toilet rolls at any price. sat in a brew pub with amazing big grilled burgers the tendency was to drink and drink the sense of freedom you find here away from the madding crowd. I know we could have stayed until closing time....we wanted to...the , beer, food and atmosphere was so good and sod the expense of craft beer at £8 a half litre and a burger at £20....will life be worth living if the world shuts down?
We took a mad cap drive up a snowy hill above the town of Vik and grabbed a few shots in the bitterly cold wind. This, just another phone shot for the moment.

According to Wikipedia, the people of Vík practise evacuation drills up to the church, in the event of an eruption of Mount Katla, which slumbers beneath the local Mýrdalsjökull glacier. An eruption could unleash a flash flood of meltwater on the low-lying town. We saw a devastated riverbed some miles further east, which suffered a similar flash flood from Eyjafjallajökull last year.
