The fascinating landscape of Vík, with its black sand and rock formations in water.
Wind was beyond crazy on that day and I was literally grabbing the tripod and pressing it down into the sand with my weight to bring the long exposures home lol
I printed this one in quite a large format, as I overall prefer it to the other take
In 1991, the US journal Islands Magazine counted this beach as one of the ten most beautiful beaches on Earth. Its stretch of black basalt sand is one of the wettest places in Iceland. The cliffs west of the beach are home to many seabirds, most notably puffins which burrow into the shallow soils during the nesting season. Offshore lie fingers of basalt rock (stacks) remnants of a once more extensive cliffline Reynisfjall, now battered by the sea.
Vík lies directly beneath the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which itself is on top of the Katla volcano. Katla has not erupted since 1918, and this longer than typical repose period has led to speculation that an eruption may occur soon. An eruption of Katla could melt enough ice to trigger an enormous flash flood, potentially large enough to obliterate the entire town. The town's church, located high on a hill, is believed to be the only building that would survive such a flood. Thus, the people of Vík practice periodic drills and are trained to rush to the church at the first sign of an eruption.

Its been some months since i shared a photo on flickr so today i decided to do some more editing on my Iceland Holiday from Dec 2015.
This is the beautiful Vik, you usually she the cute Vik church photographed in the summer surrounded by lupine flowers. I was lucky enough to to have a complete snowed out view complete with an all day sunset

Vik Beach on Norway's Lofoten Islands is a great place to view and photograph Auroras... when the sky doesn't cloud-over completely in front of your very eyes!!

Vik Iceland
still going through files from my Iceland trip in October , this was taken on Vik beach on the last day of our trip ,a little stopper helped to slow down the shutter speed to 2 seconds
The village of Vík í Mýrdal is the southernmost village in Iceland. According to the www it must be the place where it rains most on Iceland. So I'm glad I could took a photo with some nice sunshine :)
I've taken a few similar shots over the years, and no doubt there will be more in the future! Dusk at Vík beach in southern Iceland.

A few days ago I returned from a photographic adventure in Iceland, in the company of my friend Alessandro Giacometti.
These days were so exciting as we could visit the most iconic locations but also the less famous ones.
Once arrived in the coast of Vik I headed to its famous cliffs. The wind blew hard causing the sea to create waves of several meters. Staying close to the coast was very dangerous.
Several photographers were already lined up to photograph the sea stacks. Only after a bit I finally found the composition I wanted, transforming the scene in a more dramatic way with the waves that hit us repeatedly.
Our AirBnB was only around the corner from this beach so we had ample opportunity to visit when we thought it was the optimum time. The first day of our three night stay the sky was a white out while the second day we had what we wanted: menacing looking clouds to 'compliment' those dangerous 'sneaker waves'.
Anyway, the clouds appeared just as we wanted them. The bleakness of this image may not be everyone's cup of tea but we class this as one of our favourite Iceland images.

Vík í Mýrdal, Southern Region, Iceland
Iceland’s sparsely populated southern coast is full of natural wonders, including mountains, glaciers and volcanoes. Amidst these harsh environs is the small village of Vik, where the austere but beautiful church, Reyniskirkja, overlooks the 300 residents from a raised position – deliberately protected from lava flows and melt-water. Here, the red roof is juxtaposed with the lush green of the surrounding mountainsides, with inclement weather coming in from the wild Atlantic.

This is a composite photo made with seven shots. I used 6 shots with different exposure to take the church at night and to obtain an adequate exposure of the hardly illuminated building and the soil in the foreground and then I used a seventh shot taken two days before in another area of Iceland to add the northern lights.
I do not use to publish this kind of composite shots but in this case the result, in my opinion, is worth to be published. I hope you like it.
