According to Wikipedia, the people of Vík practise evacuation drills up to the church, in the event of an eruption of Mount Katla, which slumbers beneath the local Mýrdalsjökull glacier. An eruption could unleash a flash flood of meltwater on the low-lying town. We saw a devastated riverbed some miles further east, which suffered a similar flash flood from Eyjafjallajökull last year.

The village of Vík í Mýrdal is the southernmost village in Iceland, located on the main ring road around the island, around 180 km by road southeast of the capital Reykjavík.
Despite its small size, it is the largest settlement for some 70 km around and is an important staging post.
Vík lies directly beneath the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which itself is on top of the Katla volcano. Katla has not erupted since 1918, and this longer than typical repose period has led to speculation that an eruption may occur soon. An eruption of Katla could melt enough ice to trigger an enormous flash flood, potentially large enough to obliterate the entire town. The town's church, located high on a hill, is believed to be the only building that would survive such a flood.

South Iceland, the petrified "troll" ship at sunrise, the lens I used is in its death throes, I had it since 2005, it's not a good lens anyway, but it served well until it fell from a bed to a tiled floor in a hotel room in Spain 6 months ago, it's never been the same since, it won't focus if there are any filters, the image stabilizer function is gone, and it won't work with a timer, but fortunately still works with a remote and no filters (sometimes).

Picture taken on my trip to Iceland in October 2013. Only had my ND8 filter with me, so needed a small aperture to "slow down" the water. Post-processing done in Photoshop.

A stormy day once again in Vik at the Black Beach. Conditions where hard to shoot in. Sea spray, high winds and somewhere close to a million tourists.
Beautiful area to visit on the south shores at Vik with the north Atlantic Ocean crashing onto the black sand beaches and many formations all due to volcanic activity.
Una de las cosas que mas me llamó la atención de mi viaje por Islandia, fue el colorido de sus edificios. Rojos, naranjas, verdes, azules, inundan las cubiertas y paredes de los edificios marcando un contraste con los tonos grisáceos de los cielos nublados y las laderas volcánicas de las montañas. En la foto el tejado de un color rojo intenso de la iglesia de Vik, destaca sobre el verde de la pradera de la montaña a lo lejos.
One of the things that caught my eyes most of the time during my recent trip to Iceland, was the color of its buildings. Reds, oranges, greens, blues, flood the roofs and walls of buildings marking a contrast with the gray tones of cloudy skies and volcanic hillsides. In the picture the bright red roof of Vik's church, highlights over the green mountain meadow in the distance.
Shame we didnt get any stars but i still enjoyed the light being produced by the lighthouse.
