A single photo can communicate a mass of valuable information in seconds, hence the saying "a picture is worth a thousand words". Photos are integral to real estate marketing. Every listing has interior and exterior photos which enable buyers to quickly screen properties online but gaining a perspective of a neighbourhood, community and municipality is difficult from the ground. There's no better way to gain this perspective than from a 'birds eye' view using images taken at an 'oblique' angle to the ground from the air. So, on September 25, 2014, ViewPoint Realty, in partnership with Vision Air Services, took to the skies over HRM via helicopter with ace check pilot Fred Shuman and two photographers, Tim L'Esperance of Vision Air (also a pilot) and Sean McMullen, Director of Marketing and photographer at ViewPoint. We took more than 4,000 photos from altitudes ranging from 1,200 to 8,000 feet over the course of three hours. The weather was exceptional and we hope you agree that the resulting photos are too!

During our two-day trekking through the jungle with the so-called bunong tribe in Sen Monorom (Cambodia), we got lost a few times since paths are not exactly defined there...
The boy in the picture is one of the young (bunong) boys who were accompanying us. He easily climbed that tree in order to see which direction we had to take.
Sen Monorom, Cambodia.

I captured an image of this truck moving at high speed down a road for brief 4 FFVC using my phone camera, it was inspired by the brief before it “brief 3 Time” and using the same app “Camera FV-5 Lite” with a low shutter speed of 1/6 sec to give a blurry effect of movement to the traffic in the image and a low ISO of 63 to keep the image clear as there was enough light from the high shutter speed that Higher ISO was not required. I also added some additional techniques learned in brief 4 taking into consideration additional subject matter and how it would affect the image such as the road and fence railing. I changed the viewpoint to come from the railing (getting lower and resting my camera on it helping stabilize and keep most of the image sharp in compensation for the low shutter speed) allowing the view to flow down the leading lines of the railing with the road, buildings and traffic to a central point in the shot. I tilted this view as well to add some extra drama to the shot. I finally upped the lighting in post with adobe photoshop to make the colours a little more vibrant and cropped it to 6x9 as it was the best printing ratio that fit the image best.
This was easily one of my favourite images and was one of the first that I felt looked like it had artistic intent. The brief FFVC gave quite a lot of creative freedom and I feel the plan I went in with to showcase and use primarily viewpoint and shutter speed to create this dramatic shot that almost looks like the imagery and its subjects are being pulled by the gravitational force of this centre point all being sucked in like a blackhole would worked very well to address those techniques I chose from the brief. I feel with brief 4 my photography skills have massively improved and jumped the most showing me that planning and intention is incredibly important and this can be seen in this image compared to my older images that played solely with shutter speed settings.

Isn't it nice to see a wee daisy pushing it's little pink and white head out of the grass? Makes you feel that life isn't so bad after all. It could, of course be my antibiotics starting to work. Whatever it was, it made the day bearable, even enjoyable. Thank you daisy. Beware, the grass cutters will be round in a week or two, so flower and flourish while you can.
