Sunrise on the shores of Montauk Point State Park on the south fork of Long Island, NY.

My lighthouse run continued yesterday morning with a sunrise shoot at Montauk Point State Park. We left the house at 1:30 am to get there before dawn, and were greeted with pretty decent conditions as a storm was clearing. It turned out to be a great day for the beach. Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend!

Cavern Cascade on the Gorge Trail of Watkins Glen State Park.

In contrast to the image posted yesterday, this was taken from the opposite side of the falls before the morning light reached the back wall. The feeling was much more somber, yet still had a natural beauty of textures and subtleties.

These guys are hard to photograph. So pretty though. I have 10 of them in my little pond. Very relaxing and fun to watch. I was told the blue one is more rare. I just know that I like them. :)

This is a re-edit of a shot taken back in 2009. I am uploading a lot of photos to viewbug.com, and having to increase dpi and file size on them, and I found that for some reason, the site won't let me pull from my home computer, so I've been taking the images right off Flickr after reposting them there. If they look familiar to you, they just might be! If you've been looking at my work for a long time, you might recall these shots. I hope you will like them, anyway, and they will be a new experience for those who haven't seen all my albums yet! I'll be off Flickr most of the time as I've had tons of transitioning to do, moving hundreds of photos, editing, and trying to go to work in the meantime. Not enough hours in the day...

Marvão Castle stands at a height of 843 metres above sea level, on one of the highest points in the Serra de São Mamede, known as the Serra do Sapoio, in Portugal. The crag on which it stands is a fairly rugged escarpment, forming a natural point of defence, to which access can only be gained from the east, the direction in which the village has spread inside the walls. From here it was possible to watch over the nearby frontier with Spain and observe the Spanish town of Valencia de Alcántara, from where enemy forces were frequently expected to come.

The first castle to be built in Marvão was by its founder, the 8th century Islamic knight, Ibn Marwan. He used the hilltop fort as a stronghold to survey all his conquered lands. Islamic rule held strong for nearly 5 centuries until Marvão was reconquered in the 1160s by King Afonso I.

Just over a hundred years later, during the reign of King Dom Dinis, the current Castelo de Marvão was built. This was at a time when the Moors were finally being pushed back and the border with Spain needed to be secured.

Marvão Castle itself is a fine example of a crusader-era medieval castle. Its austere thick granite walls enclose part of the village and the tall central keep. There are many innovative features to aid the defence of the castle such as; arrow-slits to reign arrows on any attackers, bent entrances to slow down the progress if the gates were breached and a series of "killing zones" such as the triple gate where death could be rained down on any invaders. Male Hooded Merganser with his catch of the day on the Rideau River, in Ottawa.

Unfortunately for him, he seemed to be struggling with the fish, trying to flip it to align with his throat but the fish eventually escaped. Good day for the fish. Not so much for the merganser.

Impressions of India – 38

This is another picture taken early in the morning inside the Ahichhatragarh Fort (Fort of the Hooded Cobra), in Nagaur, India.

The Ahhichatragarh Fort is in the center of Nagaur city, which had witnessed the courage of “Rao Amar Singh Rathor” who confronted the powerful Mughal kingdom. The Nagaur Fort was constructed by the originators of Nagaur in line with the Vaastu shastra. This fort has dual walls and is bordered by a profound surge. The frontier of this fort is around 5000 ft lengthwise. The Nagaur Fort has 2 parallel frontier walls and 28 security towers.

Just bought this awesome figure for my nephew and I couldn't resist the temptation of buying one for myself...and here is the first picture of the series hehe. I used a flash to paint it and to get this nice contrast from the side. Still can be improved but I'll do it during my 52 weeks challenge as there is one about light paiting and he's the perfect subject. Watch this space for more.
