Facebook Video Calling:
The buzz-worthy announcement of the day was Facebook Video Calling,
aka Facebook + Skype. I've never tried video calling in Skype because
that second heavy-duty app combined with my web browser seems to be a
guarantee of a crash. I'm hoping it will be different when embedded
within the web browser!
One friend said described the significance of this beautifully:
"Grandparents everywhere thank you!"
What makes Facebook Video Calling so significant is the audience
already there. Families, friends, all the people we already know. I've
been using Google Video chat for quite a while now, but the problem is
that most of my friends and family don't have Google email. I have a
different set of friends who don't have Facebook, but that is a much
smaller community. So this will let me reach more people. Nice.
Meanwhile they do face some stiff competition! Google+ has a new
feature called "Hangout" in which up to TEN people can simultaneously
videochat. It really is pretty impressive. In the screenshot I have
here, seven people are chatting both in video/voice and in typing chat
on the side. Gary has shared a link which he offered to me for sharing
with others ( imgarysmith.com/gplus ), so I am assuming it is
OK to use his name (which is also his brand). Gary is helping me learn
some of the tips about Hangout. There are people in the chat from San
Francisco to Lithuania, from mid-afternoon to 6AM (yikes). One person
is walking around town with their computer visiting stores,
coffeeshops and driving. Someone else shows us the sunset outside his
window. One person muted their video display but is still listening in
while they fix dinner. Another person doesn't have a videocamera so
plugged in a screenshot. Another person hacked their feed to display
both a screenshot and a camera display. The tols CamFix and ManyCam
were recommended for this.
But Google+ doesn't have my family in it yet. So, me? I want both. :)

What you look like in a Skype video call if you don't have a camera and mine is on: I look into the Eye of Logitech so that you feel like there is eye contact. You see me looking at you because I look at this. This is your eye.

When you chat with random strangers, only being able to communicate via text messages can get a bit dull. Not only that, but we as humans tend to be visual creatures - If we can actually see something it makes the experience much more meaningful than if we were to purely imagine everything in our minds. Feeling scared, Labra and Rossa got a video call by Titana to make themselves home, by Titana doing facial comedy.
I did a bit of admin on the computer (after a lie-in and a late breakfast) and then drove to take a card and flowers to Simon & Claire at the vicarage, and the CHEQS Magazines to Southrop & Honeycombe Leaze. After lunch I had the joy of a video call, so I could see Frankie play and hear lots of his new words - he's getting more each time we 'see' him! Then I went on my bike to take the magazines to Eastleach and the outlying areas, which took a while but was enjoyable - apart from the last bit when I was hot, thirsty and tired!

This was February 2019, when we were staying with my precious son Karl. Today, for the first time in almost 3 weeks, I got to videocall him, with the help of one of the wonderful nurses at Stoke rehab hospital. He has had some terrible episodes in the last couple of weeks, since Covid stopped visiting, but NOTHING will ever take away the joy of us seeing each other today!
