Détail de la sculpture "Vent d'Europe" de Gianni Visentin

I've been having so much fun with light new toys recently — the Z6 and Canon G5 X — I decided to get out some old, clunky gear and see what it felt like and what I could do with it...

This female Coppersmith Barbet is trying to jettison a load of digested berries consumed during the mating process. The cloacal (reproductive organ), which appeared as a swollen vent is clearly visible. Contrary to other birds, her poo is brownish and hard in texture while most is whitish and watery.

This is probably due to its dietary of fruits and berries.

Coppersmith Barbet F-cking in broad daylight

All the while I was looking out for that ‘man thing’ to appear from behind the male bird but it was nowhere to be found. I was wondering how do they do it?

It goes like this…. The male does not possess a penis as most birds don’t

Instead both sexes possess a special organ known as a cloaca (part of the vent). When they get into position as seen above, their cloacas are pressed together and the sperm is transfer from the male to the female, in a fraction of a second !! This lightning fast action is called a cloacal kiss. The pair would repeat the process numerous times throughout the day for many days. I don’t think I’ll ever enjoy doing that, but for a bird it’s all about quantity and not quality

However the female will be awarded with a berry after each intense session.

When the male runs out of berries he would then quickly looks for more in preparation for the next round of excitement.

Most male birds do not have a penis with the exception of ducks and geese which possess a whopping penis length of 18 inches (that is even one inch longer than mine!!)

They need such scary length because ducks and geese do it over water. They can't simply rub cloacas as water will swallow their precious sperm.

The long length will ensure deep and fast delivery of its load inside the female reproductive organ. Ducklings guaranteed

When newly built these vents looked really spacy and were photographed a lot, nowadays they look quite grotty. . . !

This is an old vent on the side of Capulin. The small hill is a spatter vent, formed by blobs of molten lava thrown off from the vent.

The trees are juniper and pinon pine.

Being the up n at em party type that I am I thought I would head out into my home town with hours to go before the new year and take some pictures of vents and other inanimate objects :)

Party on!

looking up at the right moment

My recent video was an exercise in visualisation and composition. I hope you'll give it a watch (if you haven't already) youtu.be/e_W_y95jSfM

This was one the images. It didn't work as a normal B&W and I was on the verge of scrapping it when, just for fun, I converted it to a negative B&W and now I quite like it. Vents on the top of storage buildings in the fishing area of the port of El Campello, Spain

It's sitting on a moving pine? tree!

The Light-vented Bulbul is a medium-sized (19 cm), noisy, conspicuous bulbul with a black crown, a white nape stripe bordered posteriorly by a black band, a thick black moustachial stripe and a buffy auricular patch. The back and wings are grayish with olive yellow highlights and edgings to the flight feathers; the throat and undersides are white, separated by a grayish-brown, diffuse breast band. The bill and legs are black.

It might have behooved me to take a new picture, with even more detail, but that would have required waiting until tomorrow. So I cropped this picture, and blogged on my photo journal/blog/whatever ghostvision. This is going to bug me at some point, but I like the way it looks now. Its all about NOW (babble, babble).
