The value of nypa sap production was documented by Worldview’s pilot project completed in 2014. Ten villages were engaged in nypa sap tapping for production of healthy sweetener syrup in a cottage industry facility. The project provided valuable income to the tappers and production staff, with production of 1000 liter readymade syrup of high quality packed in handy 300 ml bottles as a result.
The flower branch is cut for collection of nypa sap. Each tree yields approximately one liter per day.

Enjoy this photo of our frolics on Labor Day weekend, September 2, 2023. Our friends opened their unique art museum for this pop up exhibit, with colorful artworks spread out along the sidewalks and backyard for our viewing pleasure. An eclectic group of artists and luminaries were spotted at this impromptu event, including Howard Rheingold, Janey Fritsche, Phyllis Florin, Priscilla Wheeler, Marshall Smith, Tim Pozar, Dana Dworin, Matisse Enzer, Kirsten Beuthin and Vi©kisa, to name but a few.
For our art collective, this gathering was a wonderful alternative to our many expeditions to Burning Man over the years. As much as we loved the Playa’s big art and magic in the early days, many of us now feel that our community festival has lost its soul as it grew to cater to huge crowds of materialistic party-goers who don’t share our values. Burning Man’s excessive use of fossil fuels and natural resources is unsustainable and no longer appropriate in the era of climate change.
So instead of generating tons of carbon each year to bring our large art installations to the Black Rock Desert, we decided to shift gears and create more lightweight exhibits in our own backyard, reducing our environmental footprint without compromising our artistic integrity. Creating art sustainably and displaying it in our own backyards is a wonderful way to strengthen our communities and build a better world.

The global EV market has seen dramatic growth over the past decade but, to meet net-zero targets, the industry will need to ramp-up battery manufacturing and EV charging infrastructure. What steps should battery manufacturers be taking now to mobilize a stable demand and supply for all required resources—skilled labor, materials, manufacturing capacity, and technology. How can battery manufacturers achieve net-zero manufacturing? What actions are required by the industry to create a viable battery recycling business model and value chain?

High magnification of a rose leaf achieved by attaching a reversed Nikon "nifty fifty" to my trusty Sigma 10mm macro. No great artistic value really, just interesting. I particularly like the little red polygonal cells - their not visible to the naked eye.

Value(s) for Money? Philanthropy as a Catalyst for Social Change (March 6-9, 2014)
Increasing social and environmental challenges, writ globally, are raising the stakes for philanthropy to find "solutions". The deeply complex nature of these challenges, however, defies easy fixes and requires more sophisticated and diffuse systems level approaches. Is the philanthropic sector ready, or capable of meeting critical systemic challenges? Probably not, as seen through the lens of Michael Edwards in a recent think piece entitled 'Beauty and the Beast: Can Money Ever Foster Social Transformation?'.
Innovative funding mechanisms that support social change - like crowd-funding, social impact bonds, payments for eco-system services and prize-backed challenges - have diversified the funding landscape and brought in new resources. The system, however, is arguably out of balance with too much focus placed on revenue-generation, and directing financial resources, through the market. At the same time, less funding is available for the deeper, less tangible drivers of social change - change that is driven by the beneficiaries themselves and is inherently more democratic. Money, while a seemingly essential tool in change processes, can be a "curse", reinforcing or exacerbating the very circumstances and power imbalances at the heart of systemic social challenges.
The objective of this program, in partnership with Hivos, is to shape a new narrative on funding for deep social change that can influence current and future funding trends and global policies.
