FOV: 3" wide.

 

15 mL of Plaster of Paris was hydrated with 7.5mL of a solution of 1mL sugar and ~20 crystals of CuCl2. On top was added about 1mL of barium carbonate, 0.5mL of sulfur and about 0.5mL sodium nitrate. After the plaster had set it was heated until bluish yellow incandescence using a MAPP gas torch. While heating, the mixture on top 'exploded' leaving a small amount remaining.

 

The luminescence of this sample was particularly bright in the red, having one of the brightest responses to blue.

Baloneystonite phosphor (aka BaS:Cu) created using BaSO4{4 Spn}, charcoal{1 Spn}, sugar{0.15ml} CuCl2*2H2O{~30 grains} and NaNO3{2 Spn} as an oxidizer. The sodium nitrate caused the barium sulfate to melt and boil under the heat of the MAPP gas torch. This created a hard thin insoluble shell around the specimen.

 

Shown in phosphorescent state after exposure to UVabc light.

302 Group's Preserved Dennis Dart CE02 UVC seen at the Brislington Bus Rally on Sunday 28th July 2024.

 

From the basement lab comes this 3.5" wide specimen.

 

Salt, Aluminum Sulfate, Magnesium Sulfate, Sodium Metasilicate, Sulfur and a small amount of Sodium Hydroxide was combined with water and allowed to evaporate for a few days. This produced a thick viscous yellow liquid that easily formed small crystals.

 

This liquid formed the "base" for Synthilite II. This was put into an aluminum foil form. On top was sprinkled some sulfur and filings from a new US penny (zinc + copper).

 

After drying in the sun for a day, the sample was covered in foil and roasted over charcoal coals for about 4 hours. The resulting substance was a hard dry gray material with many air bubbles created by the aluminum sulfate expanding as it became aluminum hydroxide. The material melted quite easily from the heat of the MAPP gas torch resulting in a very hard white ceramic-like "rock". The rock fluoresced mostly blue.

 

It was then topped with a small pile of strontium carbonate + sulfur and lead (from lead sinker filings). The pile was then heated with the MAPP gas torch which caused it to ignite as the sulfur burned. As the heating continued, the pile grew more incandescent and then sunk into the rock.

The vast majority of minerals containing the uranyl ion (UO2)+2 fluoresce a yellowish green. A small group of minerals have this green fluorescence shifted toward the blue. These minerals include liebigite: Ca[UO2(CO3)3] * 10-11H2O, andersonite: Na2Ca[UO2(CO3)3] * 6H2O and shrockingerite: Na2Ca3[UO2(CO3)3](SO4)F * 10H2O.

 

A common anion in these three minerals is the carbonate ion. I wondered if this might be the cause of the blueward shift in the spectrum.

Equal amounts (by volume) of calcium chloride, sodium carbonate and uranyl nitrate were combined with water. The resulting precipitate (calcium carbonate) was filtered and the remaining solution was left to recrystallize. The precipitate showed no fluorescence

 

The recrystallized solution produced minerals with two distinct colors of green luminescence, yellow-green and blue-green. My current hypothesis is that the blue-green material may be andersonite. The main component of the material should be NaCl.
